New Mexico Governor Receives Backlash for Gun Carry Ban
New Mexico Governor Faces Backlash for Banning Gun Carry in Albuquerque
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has stirred up controversy by issuing an executive order that suspends the right to carry guns in Albuquerque and the surrounding county for the next 30 days. This move has drawn criticism from both conservatives and surprising sources on the left.
Grisham signed the order on Thursday, declaring gun violence a public health emergency in the Democrat-controlled state. However, her decision to unilaterally suspend open and concealed carry laws has been met with immediate backlash. Many argue that this action may be unconstitutional.
Even Grisham herself acknowledged the potential legal challenges to her order, suggesting that she may not win if the order is challenged in court. This admission raises further questions about the constitutionality of her decision.
Unlikely Critics
One of the unexpected critics of Grisham’s order is far-left anti-gun activist David Hogg. Taking to X, Hogg stated, “I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.”

Another unexpected critic is Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), who supports gun safety laws but believes that Grisham’s order violates the U.S. Constitution. Lieu argues, “No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.”
Impeachment Calls
Republican state Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block are pushing for Grisham’s impeachment in response to her order. Lord states, “This is an abhorrent attempt at imposing a radical, progressive agenda on an unwilling populous. Rather than addressing crime at its core, Governor Grisham is restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners.”
Block echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that there is “no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.”
Even X owner Elon Musk weighed in on the controversy, questioning how soon Grisham could be removed from office. Musk tweeted, “At risk of stating what should be obvious, deliberately violating the Constitution is next-level illegal.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) also chimed in, calling Grisham’s actions extreme and comparing them to the measures taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.
