New Mexico Governor Backtracks, Lifts Firearm Carry Ban in Emergency Order.
New Mexico Governor Reverses Course on Gun Ban, but Still Pushes for Gun-Free Zones
Amid mounting opposition and legal challenges, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico has abandoned her plan to prohibit legal gun owners from carrying firearms in Albuquerque and its surrounding areas.
However, Lujan Grisham is not giving up on her efforts to establish gun-free zones through her executive order.
On September 8, under the guise of a “public health order,” the governor issued a ban on carrying guns in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Nevertheless, both local and state officials refused to enforce the widely criticized ban, and a court issued a temporary restraining order against its implementation.
In a news release on Friday, Lujan Grisham announced her decision to scrap the ban, but she did not completely renounce gun restrictions.
Instead, her revised order still prohibits legal gun owners from carrying firearms at playgrounds, parks, and other areas designated for children’s activities. Although the statewide order mentions that this applies to areas with specified levels of violent crime, it effectively only covers Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.
Other sections of the order address state agencies responsible for corrections and behavioral health.
Cracking Down on Drug Activity
During a news conference on Friday, Lujan Grisham emphasized her intention to combat drug activity.
She called for police in “all jurisdictions” to coordinate their efforts in addressing open, illicit substance abuse and drug use.
According to Lujan Grisham, New Mexico cannot tolerate illicit drug activity, which has been largely unaddressed due to various barriers such as treatment, incarceration, and insufficient resources.
Republican state Senator Greg Baca, leader of the minority party in the Senate, criticized the governor for excluding Republicans from the press conference.
Baca also expressed his frustration with the government’s partisan blame during the event.
He argued that GOP-led initiatives to deny bail to criminal suspects and impose stricter penalties on repeat offenders were not adopted in this year’s legislative session.
Furthermore, Baca contended that Lujan Grisham’s focus on guns is misplaced, particularly in the case of a child whose murder prompted the initial order.
He called for a greater emphasis on finding the child’s killer rather than solely targeting firearms.

What steps should be taken according to opponents of stricter gun laws in order to effectively address the root causes of gun violence
Grounds, houses of worship, and courthouses. The governor also expressed her intentions to continue pushing for stricter gun control measures, stating that she remains committed to ensuring public safety and reducing gun violence in the state.
This reversal comes after intense backlash from gun rights advocates, who argued that the ban was an infringement on their Second Amendment rights. Critics also pointed out that the governor’s executive order failed to provide any evidence linking legal gun ownership to the rise in crime rates in the affected areas. They argued that law-abiding citizens should not be punished for the actions of criminals.
New Mexico is among several states grappling with the issue of gun control in the wake of recent mass shootings. Advocates for stricter gun laws argue that restricting access to firearms can help prevent such tragedies. They point to studies that show a correlation between stricter gun control measures and lower rates of gun violence. However, opponents of these measures argue that restricting the rights of legal gun owners will not effectively address the root causes of gun violence. They argue that focusing on mental health services, stronger law enforcement, and addressing social issues such as poverty and substance abuse would be more effective in curbing gun violence.
Despite the governor’s decision to reverse the ban, lawsuits challenging her authority to issue such an order are still pending. Legal experts argue that the governor’s executive order exceeded her authority and that any gun restrictions should be legislated through the proper channels.
The debate over gun control in the United States remains a highly divisive issue, with no easy solutions. Both sides of the argument are passionate about protecting the Second Amendment and ensuring public safety. The question remains: how can we strike a balance between safeguarding individual rights and protecting the general welfare?
In the case of New Mexico, gun rights advocates and legal experts believe that the governor’s executive order was a clear overreach of power and a violation of the rights of law-abiding citizens. They argue that any changes to gun laws should be made through the legislative process, allowing for public input and proper debate.
While Governor Lujan Grisham may have chosen to abandon her plan to ban carrying firearms in certain areas, her continued efforts to establish gun-free zones are likely to face legal challenges as well. It remains to be seen how these battles will unfold and what impact they will have on New Mexico’s gun control laws.
In the end, the debate over gun control will continue, and it is essential that both sides work together to find common ground. It is in the best interest of the public and the citizens of New Mexico to have a thoughtful and informed conversation about gun control that respects the rights of individuals while ensuring public safety. Only through open dialogue and a willingness to compromise can we hope to find effective solutions to this complex issue.
