Governor of New Mexico halts gun-carrying rights in Albuquerque.
New Mexico Governor Bans Guns in Response to Road Rage Incident
New Mexico’s Democratic Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, has taken a bold step to address gun violence in her state. Following a tragic road rage incident that resulted in the death of a child, Grisham signed an executive order declaring gun violence a public health emergency.
In an effort to protect the community, Grisham has temporarily suspended open and concealed carry laws in Albuquerque and the surrounding county for the next 30 days. However, this decision has sparked controversy, with many questioning its constitutionality.
Grisham herself acknowledged the potential legal challenges her order may face, stating, “I can’t tell you that we win it given all of the different challenges to gun violence laws and restrictions on individual firearm access and control.”

Despite the criticism, Grisham stands by her decision, asserting that her declaration of an emergency grants her “additional powers.” She believes that no constitutional right, including her oath, is absolute, as there are already restrictions on free speech and personal freedoms.
When questioned about the effectiveness of her order, Grisham acknowledged that it may not deter criminals from carrying guns during the 30-day period. However, she emphasized the need for action in a climate where safety is compromised.
