NM Sheriff Refuses to Enforce Order as Armed Citizens Arrive
Another Public Official Stands Against Gubernatorial Tyranny in New Mexico
According to KOAT in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen has made a bold announcement. He declared that his office would not enforce Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s 30-day executive order suspending citizens’ rights to carry firearms in the county.

Allen firmly stated, “The temporary ban challenges the foundations of our Constitution, but most importantly, it is unconstitutional. My oath was to protect the Constitution, and that is what I will do,” as reported by the Washington Examiner.
Lujan Grisham signed the unconstitutional order on Friday, following the tragic shooting death of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas in an apparent road-rage incident. The governor justified her edict as a response to a “public health emergency.”
Allen emphasized that even if enforced, the governor’s ban would not effectively reduce gun violence. He stated, “This order will not do anything to curb gun violence other than punish law-abiding citizens from their constitutional right of self-defense,” according to KOAT.
Joining Allen in their refusal to enforce this unconstitutional order are Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, and Police Chief Harold Medina. Bregman expressed, “As an officer of the court, I cannot and will not enforce something that is clearly unconstitutional. This office will continue to focus on criminals of any age that use guns in the commission of a crime,” as reported by the Examiner.
Over 100 people peacefully gathered in Albuquerque, openly carrying weapons in defiance of the order. State police did not issue any citations, as reported by The Western Journal.
Meanwhile, two Republican state lawmakers have already called for Lujan Grisham’s impeachment.
This act of defiance by New Mexico’s public officials serves as a reminder that there are still individuals who refuse to trample on citizens’ liberties under the pretense of following orders. It is a testament to the existence of lines in the sand.
Although the 30-day suspension of gun rights holds no practical meaning, Lujan Grisham’s attempt to subjugate the people of New Mexico remains concerning. While the “public health emergency” excuse may not work with respect to guns, it has been successful in depriving people of their First Amendment rights in the past.
Let this latest act of tyranny serve as a reminder that the Second Amendment exists to protect against governors like Lujan Grisham.
