Minnesota’s new gun control laws take effect on Tuesday.
Minnesota Implements Tougher Gun Laws to Enhance Public Safety
Minnesota is set to join 18 other states in the United States in enacting stricter gun laws aimed at improving public safety. These new laws, signed into effect by Governor Tim Walz (D-MN), include expanded background checks and the implementation of a red flag law. The red flag law allows authorities to petition the courts to temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals deemed to be a risk to themselves or others.
The comprehensive package of public safety bills passed by the legislature also introduces tighter restrictions on machine gun ownership and significant changes to the purchase and transfer of firearms.
Key Changes in the Gun Laws
- Friends and family members are no longer allowed to lend firearms for hunting trips. However, an exception is made for borrowing within hunting hours and only if both parties are together.
- Private gun transfers now require both the owner and recipient to fill out a record of transfer, including personal information. Authorities have 30 days to process the transfer, compared to the previous seven-day timeframe.
- Applications for gun transfers can be denied by a sheriff or chief of police, but the applicant must receive written notification explaining the reason for the denial, including the source of the information. The applicant has the option to appeal the decision within 20 days, but they will be responsible for their own legal and court fees.
Rob Doar, senior vice president of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, expressed concerns about the impact of these laws on law-abiding gun owners. He believes that these regulations unfairly burden responsible gun owners and fail to address the root causes of violent crime, such as mental health issues and criminal misuse of firearms.
Minnesota experienced a political shift during the midterm elections, with residents favoring Democratic candidates over Republicans. The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party now holds control over the majority of the state’s political offices, allowing them to pass progressive agendas, including gun control measures.
Despite potential resistance from rural Democrats in the state Senate, the gun safety measures were strategically included in a broader public safety bill to minimize backlash.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Walz emphasized the importance of basic gun safety in protecting children and creating a safer future. He stated, “There’s no place for weapons of war in our schools, churches, banks, or anywhere else people are just trying to live their lives. Today is about taking meaningful action to create a safer future for our kids, and I am proud to sign this commonsense lifesaving legislation into law.”
