A new law in Los Angeles has aimed to remove the homeless presence in public areas. A sweeping ordinance went into effect on Friday, which has banned sleeping and homelessness in certain parts of the Los Angeles area.
Officials stated the law prohibited any interference with ADA handicap access points. Once a resolution has been passed, storing property or obstructing the public right of way, such as sleeping and camping, would be illegal within 500 feet of schools, daycares, public parks and libraries.
City council member Kevin de Leon explained, “what’s been voted on, what’s in effect today is dealing with the blocking of ADA folks who adhere to the Americans Disabilities Act, active doorways as well as loading docks.”
Don’t let anyone tell you we need to choose between people who are homeless and people who live near encampments. If we provide real housing with services, encampments disappear, lives are transformed, money is saved , and everyone wins — housed and unhoused. pic.twitter.com/pfbmYGOGuc

The city county is set to reconvene in two weeks to approve specific areas where homeless encampments will be prohibited.
