Rep. Patrick McHenry ⁢(R-NC), the temporary Speaker of​ the House, has issued a bold directive to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi: vacate ⁢her Capitol hideaway office by tomorrow.

“Please⁣ vacate the space tomorrow, the ⁢room will be re-keyed,” an email to Pelosi’s office said,⁢ according to POLITICO. The email⁤ stated that the room will now be designated for “speaker⁢ office use.”

McHenry assumed the role of acting speaker after House Democrats joined forces with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and seven‌ other Republicans — Reps. Andy⁣ Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck‍ (CO), Eli Crane (AZ), Bob Good (VA), Matt Rosendale ‍(MT), Tim Burchett (TN), and Nancy Mace (SC) ​— to remove McCarthy from his‍ speakership.

This historic event marked the first‌ time in U.S. history that the House has ousted a speaker.

Pelosi expressed‌ her frustration, describing the eviction from her office⁢ as “a sharp⁤ departure from tradition.”​ She explained that she was unable to retrieve her ⁢belongings at the⁣ moment due to her presence in California ⁤following the passing of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

McCarthy ⁤revealed ⁤that ‍in January, when he was ⁢vying for the necessary votes to become speaker, ‍Pelosi had​ encouraged him to make concessions to a small⁣ group of Republicans who were blocking ⁣his path. This included allowing a⁢ single member to ⁢file a motion to vacate.

Reportedly, Pelosi ⁤had assured McCarthy that if a motion to vacate ever ‌arose, she would ⁤support him.
