New ‘Urbanist Party’: Sanders, AOC, Hogg – Washington Examiner

The article discusses the emergence of a new political movement dubbed the “Urbanist Party,” spearheaded by progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Vice Chairman David Hogg. As the Democratic Party faces internal divisions, these leaders are actively engaging urban and suburban populations to grow their base. According to pollster Jeremy Zogby, the movement is gaining traction, especially in large cities where Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are drawing notable crowds during their national tours.

Zogby notes that the Democratic Party is struggling at all levels, with many feeling frustrated with the party’s leadership in confronting President Trump. The potential for Sanders to run again in 2028 is uncertain due to his age, but Ocasio-Cortez shows promise, though she is not yet deemed presidential material. Zogby suggests she could position herself for a future presidential run by frist challenging incumbent politicians like Senate Minority Leader Chuck schumer.

To solidify their movement, the Urbanists need to articulate a clear agenda for governance, reminiscent of the republican Party’s “Contract with America” during Newt Gingrich’s era. while the Urbanist movement is gaining momentum, it requires a cohesive strategy to effectively attract voters in upcoming elections.

With the Democratic Party continuing to splinter, progressives are building and expanding their base, especially in big cities and suburbs.

As worn-out old bulls fight for power in Washington, the big population zones are opening their arms to the progressives led by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and party Vice Chairman David Hogg in numbers so large and supportive that a pollster tracking the movement has given it a name.

“Call it the ‘Urbanist Party,’” said Jeremy Zogby, the managing partner of John Zogby Strategies, which polled for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during his 2024 populist bid.

“I think it has legs,” he added.

Upset with how Democratic leaders are fumbling their attacks on President Donald Trump, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez have been on a national tour, bringing together thousands to “feel the Bern,” according to pollster John Zogby.

And Hogg has stepped into controversy to fund primary challengers to incumbents he sees as out of touch with the new, more aggressive movement.

“The Democratic Party is in a funk everywhere, national, state, and local,” John Zogby said during a podcast with his son. “But here’s Bernie going out to Idaho. 12,000 people, 20,000 people in Salt Lake City, 35[,000]-40,000 in Los Angeles. He’s accompanied in almost every instance by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, and they’re really riling up the fans,” he added.

“Democratic Party leaders seem to underestimate populism. We saw that in the Trump victories, and we saw that with the rise of Bernie Sanders two times in 2016 and 2020,” Jeremy Zogby said.

His polling suggests that the movement is strong and could push Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez into the 2028 presidential race, where nobody has emerged as a challenger to former Vice President Kamala Harris. She is leading all 2028 Democratic polls, but mostly due to name recognition, according to experts.

In new polling, Jeremy Zogby said that Sanders has a good base of support, especially in big cities, suburbs and among Democrats and black and younger voters.

But he pointed out that he is unpopular with union and white voters and his age, 83, is a problem for a party seeking a new and youthful voice.

Ocasio-Cortez, he said, is more popular, but he wasn’t ready to declare her presidential material.

“The big question is this. Can Bernie do a third run? I don’t know. Maybe he can. If he can’t, I don’t think AOC is ready,” Jeremy Zogby said.

His father is on the fence about Ocasio-Cortez, comparing her situation to Barack Obama, who briefly served in the U.S. Senate from Illinois before running for and winning the presidency in 2008.

“Look, it’s possible. Barack Obama was at the convention four years before he accepted the nomination, the 2004 convention, he was still a state senator from Illinois, and four years later, he’s accepting the nomination,” John Zogby said.

Noting recent polling showing that Ocasio-Cortez is polling ahead of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), he suggested her path is to beat him in 2028, then consider a presidential bid.

“That’s the route that she should take. That’s, I think, a possibly winning route and helpful to redefining the Democratic Party,” he said.

In the meantime, John Zogby said, the “Urbanist” movement should continue to build, and he advised that it develop an agenda to sell voters in the impending elections.

“These rallies are helpful to the party, but they still need a body of ideas to represent how they would govern. And right now, I think they’re still bankrupt on that. The Republican Revolution that Newt Gingrich raised in 1994 was based on a Contract with America, a body of principles. Democrats are going to have to do that,” he said.
