Federal authorities in New York announced the largest-ever seizure of counterfeit goods valued at over $1 billion.
Almost 219,000 items were seized from Manhattan storage facilities by U.S. Homeland Security Investigators and city police, authorities said Wednesday.
Two people were charged with trafficking counterfeit goods.
Photographs released by prosecutors showed shelves stacked with counterfeit wallets and bags in one location and handbags hanging from hooks from floor to ceiling in another.
“The seizures announced today consist of merchandise with over a billion dollars in estimated retail value, the largest-ever seizure of counterfeit goods in U.S. history,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said.
Additionally, the two men charged can face up to a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted. The indictments accuse them of distributing counterfeit goods since January.
According to federal authorities, the actual street value of the items seized in the raids is under $1 billion. This was based on the manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the real versions of the seized fakes.

What steps should governments and international organizations take to strengthen intellectual property rights protection laws and dismantle counterfeit operations globally
Lliams said in a statement.
The operation, which spanned from January to October of this year, was the result of a joint investigation between the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and the New York City Police Department. It targeted a network responsible for the production and distribution of counterfeit luxury goods.
The seized items included counterfeit handbags, wallets, shoes, watches, and other accessories from well-known luxury brands. These counterfeit goods were designed to closely resemble the genuine products and were being sold at significantly lower prices, deceiving unsuspecting consumers who believed they were purchasing authentic items.
The impact of the counterfeit goods trade is not limited to financial losses for the luxury brands. It also poses significant risks to consumer health and safety. Counterfeit products are often made with low-quality materials and may not meet safety standards, putting consumers at risk of unknowingly purchasing products that are potentially harmful or dangerous.
Counterfeit goods are a global problem, with criminal networks operating across borders to produce and distribute these illegal products. The sale of counterfeit goods contributes to underground economies and deprives legitimate businesses of revenue. It is a serious crime that requires the collaboration of law enforcement agencies, brand owners, and consumers to address and combat effectively.
This significant seizure in New York sends a clear message to those involved in the counterfeit goods trade that their illegal activities will not go unnoticed or unpunished. By disrupting these criminal networks and seizing their products, law enforcement authorities are working towards protecting consumers, businesses, and the economy.
It is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and educated about the risks associated with counterfeit goods. By purchasing from authorized retailers and verifying the authenticity of products, consumers can play a role in reducing the demand for counterfeit goods and supporting legitimate businesses.
Furthermore, governments and international organizations should continue to strengthen their efforts in enforcing intellectual property rights protection laws and enhancing cooperation to dismantle counterfeit operations globally.
The seizure of over $1 billion worth of counterfeit goods in New York is a significant achievement in the fight against counterfeit trade. It serves as a reminder that combating this illicit activity requires ongoing collaboration among all stakeholders and a commitment to upholding the rule of law.
The successful operation not only disrupts criminal networks but also contributes to the protection of consumers, the preservation of intellectual property rights, and the promotion of fair and legitimate trade.
As the global fight against counterfeit goods continues, it is crucial for individuals, businesses, and governments to remain vigilant and work together to combat this serious threat to our economy, safety, and consumer trust.
