New York-based medical school implementing ‘anti-bias’ curriculum, documents show
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City is implementing extensive anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles, according to internal documents obtained by the medical watchdog group Do No Harm and shared with the Washington Examiner.
Under this new initiative, the school evaluates faculty members for their contributions to DEI and has job postings that require applicants to share their commitment to anti-oppressive framework, anti-bias curriculum and student-centered learning, among others. The changes to the faculty evaluation process ensure that faculty members incorporate topics such as racism, bias, diversity, equity, and inclusion into their teaching, research, and clinical evaluation.
The medical school is also advertising for an educational consultant who can co-develop an integrative anti-oppressive framework. The school has been criticized for incorporating the ideas of Ibram X. Kendi, a professor at Boston University and author of “How to be an Antiracist.”
The medical school did not respond to a request for comment.
