NY Democrat’s Bill May Compel Chick-Fil-A to Open Sundays
A Democrat in New York Introduces Bill to Force Chick-fil-A to Open on Sundays
A Democrat in New York has recently proposed a bill that could have major implications for the popular Christian-owned restaurant chain Chick-fil-A. Assemblyman Tony Simone, who is openly critical of the company’s stance on LGBT rights, has authored Bill A08336, which would require Chick-fil-A to either open on Sundays or face removal from the state’s major highway system.
Simone expressed his concerns about Chick-fil-A’s record on LGBT rights in an interview with the New York Post, stating, “Chick-fil-A has had a terrible record on LGBT rights. I’m not going to not say that clearly.” He believes that businesses operating on the New York State Thruway should be open all seven days of the week, including Chick-fil-A, to better serve New Yorkers and travelers. He argues that if Chick-fil-A cannot meet this requirement, they should not be allowed to operate in rest stops along the highway system.
It is worth noting that there is already a standard in place that ensures at least one hot-food option is available at these rest stops every day of the week. If Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays at a particular rest stop, there are alternative restaurants open to cater to customers.
Our requirement is that we have at least one hot food option available,” explained Thruway spokesperson Jennifer Givner. “If Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays, we have other alternatives for our customers.”
Currently, there are seven Chick-fil-A restaurants on the interstate that would be affected by this bill, with plans for at least three more to be built. Chick-fil-A is well-known for its practice of closing its doors on Sundays as a way to honor God and demonstrate loyalty to Him, as stated by the company’s founder, Truett Cathy, in his book “Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People.”
This is not the first time Chick-fil-A has faced opposition in New York. Three years ago, three state legislators sent a letter to the executive director of the state Thruway Authority, urging a reevaluation of Chick-fil-A’s approval to open locations along the highway system due to the company’s public stance against same-sex marriage.

What are the perspectives of LGBT advocacy organizations and conservative groups on the bill?
Ay system, as it goes against the principles of inclusivity and equality that New York holds dear.
Simone’s bill has been met with both support and criticism from various groups. LGBT advocacy organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign have applauded the measure, seeing it as a way to hold businesses accountable for their treatment of the LGBT community. On the other hand, conservative groups and individuals argue that the bill infringes upon religious freedom and unfairly targets a specific company based on its Christian values.
Chick-fil-A, known for its devout Christian values and corporate policies rooted in these beliefs, has faced backlash and controversy in the past over its stance on LGBT rights. In 2012, the fast-food chain’s CEO, Dan Cathy, publicly expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage, sparking boycotts and protests nationwide. In response to the criticism, Chick-fil-A has since stated that it treats all customers and employees with respect and does not discriminate based on sexual orientation.
If Bill A08336 were to become law, Chick-fil-A would have to make a difficult decision. Currently, the chain is closed on Sundays, a practice deeply rooted in its Christian beliefs and a way to provide its employees with a day of rest and worship. While it is not uncommon for businesses to be open on Sundays, Chick-fil-A has maintained this policy as a way to honor its religious values.
Proponents argue that in a diverse and inclusive society, businesses should be open and accessible to all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs or sexual orientation. They contend that requiring Chick-fil-A to open on Sundays would be a step towards ensuring equal treatment for all customers and employees, regardless of the day of the week.
Critics, however, argue that the bill infringes upon Chick-fil-A’s right to practice its religious beliefs freely. They argue that businesses should have the freedom to operate according to their own values and that forcing Chick-fil-A to open on Sundays goes against the principles of religious liberty.
The debate surrounding Bill A08336 raises important questions about the intersections of religious freedom, LGBTQ rights, and businesses’ responsibilities to the communities they serve. It forces us to grapple with the tension between respecting individuals’ rights to their religious beliefs while also ensuring that businesses operate in a manner that upholds principles of equality and inclusivity.
As the bill makes its way through the New York State Assembly, it will undoubtedly continue to spark passionate discussions and debates. Regardless of the outcome, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to find a balance between religious freedom and the rights of all individuals in our society.
