NY Judge denies Trump’s request to delay civil fraud penalties
Judge Formalizes Punishments for Donald Trump in New York Civil Fraud Case
In a recent ruling, Judge Arthur Engoron has solidified the penalties imposed on former President Donald Trump in his New York civil fraud case. This comes after Trump’s attempt to delay the enforcement of these penalties by 30 days.
The fines imposed on Trump amount to a staggering $354 million, accompanied by a three-year ban on conducting business in New York. Trump had hoped to present a counter-judgment to the one proposed by New York Attorney General Letitia James. However, Judge Engoron dismissed this request, stating that Trump’s legal team failed to provide sufficient justification for a stay.
“You have failed to explain, much less justify, any basis for a stay,” Engoron said. “I am confident that the Appellate Division will protect your appellate rights.”
During the proceedings, Trump’s lawyer, Clifford Robert, argued that denying the submission of a counter-judgment would undermine fundamental fairness and due process. Robert also accused James of rushing the process, violating standard procedure for such cases.
“The Court’s direction that it sees ‘no need for a motion or conference,’ because the proposed Judgment ‘exactly tracks the’ February 16 Decision, ignores the fact that the proposed Judgment expressly states that a motion has been made, which is simply wrong. The Attorney General has not filed any motion on notice, nor moved to settle the proposed Judgment; her unseemly rush to memorialize a ‘judgment’ violates all accepted practice in New York state court,” he wrote.
Throughout the case, Trump has consistently claimed that both the prosecution and the judge were politically motivated to harm him, especially as he gears up for another presidential campaign. Critics have expressed concerns about Judge Engoron, who has exclusively donated to Democratic candidates over the past 25 years. Similar concerns have been raised about Attorney General James, who ran her campaign on a platform of going after Trump.

In a recent development, James has also threatened to seize Trump’s New York properties if he fails to pay the civil fraud fine.
“If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court, and we will ask the judge to seize his assets,” James told ABC News. “We are prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to New Yorkers, and yes, I look at 40 Wall Street each and every day.”
James was referring to the Trump Building, a 72-story skyscraper with 1.3 million square feet of office space located on Wall Street, right by the New York Stock Exchange.
What were the allegations against Trump in the civil fraud case related to Trump University?
T: 400″>However, Judge Engoron found no merit in these arguments. He stated that Robert’s allegations did not provide a valid basis for delaying the enforcement of the penalties against Trump. Engoron emphasized that the court had carefully considered the arguments made by both sides and had reached a decision based on the available evidence and legal principles.
The civil fraud case against Trump emerged from allegations that he had engaged in deceptive practices with his now-defunct Trump University. The university was accused of making false promises to students and defrauding them out of millions of dollars. After years of litigation, a settlement was reached in 2016, with Trump agreeing to pay $25 million to resolve the claims.
However, this recent ruling by Judge Engoron imposed additional penalties on Trump, effectively increasing the financial consequences for his actions. Apart from the $354 million in fines, Trump is now also barred from conducting any business activities in New York for a period of three years.
These penalties are seen as significant setbacks for Trump, who has continued to assert his innocence in the face of these allegations. The financial burden imposed by the fines and the restriction on conducting business in New York will undoubtedly impact his personal and professional life.
While Trump may choose to appeal this ruling, Judge Engoron expressed confidence that the Appellate Division would uphold his decision and protect Trump’s appellate rights. It remains to be seen how this case will proceed in the coming months and what further legal actions may be taken by both parties involved.
The ruling by Judge Engoron serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and justice, regardless of one’s position or stature. It reaffirms the principle that no one is above the law and that all individuals must be held responsible for their actions. This case also highlights the significance of the legal system in addressing allegations of fraud and ensuring fairness for all parties involved.
As the legal process continues, it is essential to uphold the integrity of the judiciary and respect the decisions made by impartial judges. The civil fraud case against Donald Trump serves as a significant precedent in holding individuals accountable for their actions and sends a clear message that fraudulent practices will not be tolerated.
