New Zealand Mom Found Guilty of Killing Three Daughters, May Get Life Sentence

Mother Found Guilty of Murdering Her Three Young Children

A heart-wrenching case unfolded in New Zealand as a mother, who had recently relocated to ‍the country, was‌ convicted this week ‍for the⁢ murder of‌ her three young children. The victims were her 2-year-old twins and their ‍6-year-old sister.

The 42-year-old mother had previously confessed to killing the twins, Maya and‌ Karla, as well as their older sister Lianè. However, she pleaded‌ not guilty to the murders, claiming that she was mentally disturbed at the time. Prosecutors, however, presented evidence that contradicted her claims, including disturbing⁤ phone messages and online searches‌ in the weeks leading up to the tragic incident, as reported by the Associated ‌Press.

“Most effective overdose ⁤in kids.”

During the four-week trial, prosecutors ‌highlighted the woman’s alarming comments⁣ about‍ wanting to harm her ‌children. They⁤ also revealed her Google search history, which included the query “most effective overdose in kids.”

The family had recently moved⁤ to New Zealand from South‌ Africa, ⁤seeking⁣ a fresh start away ‌from the‍ difficulties in their home country. Tragically, within days of their relocation, the mother attempted ‌to use zip ties to end her children’s ⁢lives. When that failed, she resorted ‍to suffocating them with pillows ‍and placing them in their ⁣beds, under the ‌covers. She then tried to take⁤ her own life.

Both the woman and her husband were medical professionals. The convicted murderer was a doctor, ‌while her husband, Graham, worked as an orthopedic surgeon, according to the New Zealand Herald. Graham discovered the lifeless bodies of‌ his children ⁣when he returned home from work on September 16, 2021. He expressed shock and claimed to have been unaware of his⁢ wife’s capability to commit such heinous acts, citing her struggles with mental health and‌ motherhood.

After⁣ a lengthy four-week trial, the jury deliberated for three days before delivering ⁣a guilty verdict on three counts of murder. Although one juror voted not guilty, New Zealand laws allow for an 11-1 ⁢split decision, as reported by the AP.

As the ‍woman ⁢left the courtroom, tears streamed ⁢down her face, mirroring the emotions of the jurors who were also visibly moved by the ⁢tragic events.

Advocating for Mental Health⁣ Awareness

In the wake of this devastating tragedy, the woman’s parents⁤ released a statement addressing the loss of their grandchildren and their daughter’s mental health.

“We would like to encourage families and individuals around the world‌ to be aware of the symptoms of post-partum depression as early as possible, both for yourselves as well as close family and friends around you,”

said her parents, Malcolm and Wendy Fawkes.

Detective Inspector Scott Anderson also expressed condolences on behalf ‌of law enforcement to the family members of the convicted murderer.

“Words cannot begin to express the tragic circumstances of this investigation,”

Anderson stated.

The mother now faces a life sentence in⁣ prison for the‌ unfathomable loss ⁤of her ‌children.
