Newsom blasts Trump over leaving Paris Agreement: ‘Believe your own damn eyes’

President Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, the Washington Examiner reported. The move was among the numerous executive orders Trump signed on his first day in office after his inauguration. The new president called the climate agreement unfair and costly while announcing the decision.

“I’m immediately withdrawing from the unfair one side Paris Climate Accord, rip off. The United States will not sabotage their own industries, while China pollutes with impunity,” Trump said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) slammed Trump for making the decision, citing the recent wildfires plaguing Southern California as a reason to take climate change seriously and stay in the Paris Climate Agreement. He issued an official statement on Trump’s executive order.

“If you don’t believe in science, believe your own damn eyes,” Newsom said while showing photos of the damage caused by the fires.

Currently, there does not appear to be any legitimate scientific evidence linking climate change to California’s wildfires. This claim has been often repeated by left-wing politicians in the country, such as Newsom. However, actual data supporting these claims have yet to be presented. Previous devastating wildfires in other countries, such as Chile in February 2024, found no “statistically significant impact” on those fires, according to a World Weather Attribution service study.

Newsome has repeatedly blamed climate change as the reason for wildfires in his state, even before this year’s destruction in Southern California. On multiple occasions, while touring the destruction that fires caused in California, he categorized it as a “climate damn emergency.”

As of Tuesday morning, President Trump had not acknowledged or replied to Newsom’s comments about withdrawing from the Paris Agreement.
