NFL Legend Dick Butkus’ Death Certificate Reveals Actual Cause of Death: Report
Legendary Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus’ cause of death revealed
Last month, the legendary Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus passed away peacefully in his sleep. Now, his death certificate has unveiled the true cause of his demise.
According to the Los Angeles Department of Health, Butkus suffered a stroke, medically referred to as a “cerebrovascular accident.” This revelation pays homage to his remarkable career as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL), where he was considered one of the best in his position.
Butkus, who was 80 years old at the time of his passing, had been battling high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) in the years leading up to his death. He had also undergone coronary bypass surgery in 2001 and was recently diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.
Emergency responders were called to Butkus’ residence in Malibu, California, on October 5, following a report of cardiac arrest. Tragically, they pronounced him dead at the scene.
A True Bear and NFL Legend
“Dick was the ultimate Bear, and one of the greatest players in NFL history,” said Bears chairman George McCaskey in a statement. “He exuded what our great city is about and, not coincidentally, what George Halas looked for in a player: toughness, smarts, instincts, passion, and leadership. He refused to accept anything less than the best from himself, or from his teammates.”
Butkus was widely known as “The Most Feared Man in Football” and was a five-time first-team All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection during his nine seasons in the NFL. He retired at the age of 31 due to a knee injury but was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979.
Aside from his football career, Butkus enjoyed a successful second career as a sports broadcaster, actor, and sought-after pitchman for various products.
Butkus’ legacy will forever be intertwined with the city of Chicago, where he grew up and played for Chicago Vocational High and the University of Illinois before joining the Bears.
Teammate Ed O’Bradovich described Butkus as someone who didn’t settle for simply hitting opponents but rather loved to “crush people.”
Despite his immense talent, the Bears never reached the postseason during Butkus’ playing years. However, he remained hopeful for the team’s future success, stating that they should always be in contention.
Butkus is survived by his wife, Helen, and their children Ricky, Matt, and Nikki.
