NFL Players Are Suspended After Throwing Punches
After throwing punches after the weekend’s game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Broncos, a linebacker from the Denver Broncos was suspended and the offensive lineman from the Los Angeles Rams was also suspended.
Edge rusher Randy Gregory and offensive guard Oday Aboushi traded blows as the teams were shaking hands following the Rams’ 51-14 blowout win over the Broncos at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
When the fight broke out, players raced in to end it.
“As you were walking toward a group of teammates, coaches, and media, you both stopped and swung at each other’s head and/or neck,” said Jon Runyan, NFL vice-president of football operations, wrote a letter to both the players and officials. “Your aggressive conduct could have caused serious injury and clearly does not reflect the high standards of sportsmanship expected of a professional.”
Denver Broncos fired Following the humiliating defeat, Nathaniel Hackett became head coach.
Hackett, who was in his first year coaching the team, lost the confidence of the team’s new ownership, led by Walmart heir Rob Walton. Despite the presence of a quarterback and a prized passer, the Broncos have had a difficult season scoring points. acquisition Russell Wilson.
“Following extensive conversations with (general manager) George (Paton) and our ownership group, we determined a new direction would ultimately be in the best interest of the Broncos,” Walton’s son-in-law, Greg Penner, said in a statement. “This change was made now out of respect for everyone involved and allows us to immediately begin the search for a new head coach.”
Already, the Broncos will be out of the playoffs for the 7th consecutive season. Pat Bowlen was the previous owner. The Broncos won three Super Bowls, including back to back in 1998 and 1999.
Hackett, who had previously served three seasons as the Green Bay Packers’ offensive coach, was hired by Hackett in January. He edged out former Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who instead was hired by the Minnesota Vikings who are 12-3 under him. The Broncos made Hackett their first-round pick and two second-rounders, then signed Wilson to a five year, $245 million contract.
Wilson is having his worst season and he played poorly again Sunday throwing three interceptions. The team averages just 15.5 points per games with Wilson, the likely future Hall of Famer.
Hackett made several questionable decisions throughout the season. The first was against Seattle. In that game, Hackett had his kicker attempt an 84-yard field goal instead going for a first down, while leading 17-16 with just a minute remaining.
