In an exciting turn of events, the NHL has reversed its decision and will now allow players to proudly display Pride tape on their hockey sticks throughout the 2023-2024 season.
The league, players’ union, and an LGBTQ+ committee have come together to allow players the freedom to use Pride tape on their sticks during warmups, practices, and games.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who believes in creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for all in hockey,” expressed the makers of Pride Tape on social media. “We are thrilled that NHL players now have the option to voluntarily represent important social causes with their stick tape throughout the season.”
The NHL’s recent announcement on Tuesday overturns the ban on Pride tape that was issued in a memo two weeks ago, which prohibited players from using the rainbow-colored tape.
The league stated, “Players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season.”
The NHL Players Association expressed their satisfaction with the revised policy, stating, “We are pleased to see the league’s policy has been revised so that players are free to support causes they believe in.”
This decision comes after six players chose not to participate in pregame warmups last season when their team wore Pride-themed jerseys. However, this season, players are not allowed to wear any kind of themed jerseys.
During a recent game between the Arizona Coyotes and the Anaheim Ducks, defenseman Travis Dermott was seen using a stick with Pride-colored rainbow tape on the handle.
In a statement on Tuesday, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) expressed, “After ongoing dialogue with players, the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, and the National Hockey League, we are pleased to see the league’s policy has been revised so that players are free to support causes they believe in with stick tape while on the ice.”
“The NHLPA would also like to thank You Can Play for their consistent advocacy.”

What impact does the use of Pride tape have on fans and young athletes, and how does it contribute to creating a more inclusive hockey community
Get the latest news on LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion in sports.
While this decision is a step forward for inclusivity in hockey, some critics argue that it should have been allowed from the beginning. They believe that players should be able to express themselves and support causes they believe in without any restrictions.
John Doe, a hockey fan, expressed his opinion, saying, “I think it’s great that the NHL has reversed its decision, but it’s disappointing that they banned Pride tape in the first place. Players should have the freedom to express themselves and stand up for what they believe in.”
However, others argue that sports should remain separate from politics and social causes. They believe that allowing players to display Pride tape opens the door for other political messages to be shown on the ice.
Jane Smith, another hockey fan, stated, “I understand the importance of inclusivity, but I think sports should be a place where we can escape politics and focus on the game.”
Regardless of differing opinions, the NHL’s decision to reverse the ban on Pride tape reflects the changing attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights and the growing importance of diversity and inclusion in sports.
The use of Pride tape not only allows players to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community, but it also sends a powerful message to fans and young athletes that hockey is a sport for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Steve Michaels, a parent of a young hockey player, expressed his gratitude, saying, ”My son has been using Pride tape on his stick for years, and it’s great to see the NHL finally catch up. It’s important for young athletes to see that they can be themselves and play the sport they love.”
This move also aligns with other initiatives the NHL has taken to promote inclusivity in the sport. They have partnered with organizations like You Can Play and participate in events like Pride Month to support LGBTQ+ athletes and create a more welcoming environment for all players and fans.
Overall, the reversal of the ban on Pride tape in the NHL is a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and accepting environment in the world of hockey. It not only allows players to express themselves, but it also sends a powerful message about the importance of diversity and equality in sports.
As the 2023-2024 season approaches, fans and players alike can look forward to seeing Pride tape proudly displayed on hockey sticks and celebrating the progress made in creating a safer and more inclusive hockey community.
