NHL roundup: Owen Tippett’s hat trick lifts Flyers over Sabres


Owen Tippett scored three goals for the Philadelphia Flyers, who won a dominating 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

James van Riemsdyk and Joel Farabee each scored one goal for the Flyers who ended a four-game losing streak.

Tony DeAngelo and Kevin Hayes each had two assists to the Flyers. Goaltender Carter Hart made 36 saves.

Victor Olofsson scored two goals to help the Sabres lose their second consecutive game. Sabers goaltender Craig Anderson stopped 17 shots.

Maple Leafs 5, Hurricanes 2

Two goals were scored by Zach Aston-Reese as Toronto beat visiting Carolina.

Morgan Rielly scored a goal and assisted Auston Matthews to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1-1 homestand. Mitchell Marner, Auston Matthews, and Calle Jarnkrok also scored. John Tavares had two assists and Calle Jarnkrok had two. Ilya Samsonov stopped 32 shots to complete Toronto’s 2-1-1 homestand.

The Hurricanes’ opener of a three game road trip featured Martin Necas and Brady Skjei scoring for them. Carolina suffered its third loss in four games after Pyotr Kochetkov’s 19 saves.

Blues 5, Capitals 2

Sammy Blais was able to win his first career two goal game, leading St. Louis past Washington. Brayden Schenn scored and assisted for the Blues who have won three of five of their previous five games.

Kasperi Kapanen and Jordan Kyrou both scored in St. Louis. Brandon Saad also got two assists. Joel Hofer, who travelled from Springfield, AHL, to replace Jordan Binnington was able to make 32 saves for Blues in his first game of the season.

Martin Fehervary scored and Nicklas Backstrom stopped 17 shots for Capitals. They have lost just two of their six previous games.

Blue Jackets 4, Ducks 7

Anaheim won a thrilling victory over Columbus thanks to Max Jones’ late breakaway goal.

Anaheim lost the lead four times. This resulted in a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation. Jones intercepted a pass from Andrew Peeke at 17:23 and raced down the ice in pursuit of the winner. Two empty-net goals were then added by the Ducks.

Anaheim’s Scott Harrington scored two goals. Troy Terry and Ryan Strome each recorded a goal and an assists, while Max Comtois (and Trevor Zegras) added one goal each. Columbus was assisted by Patrik Laine, who had a goal. Cole Sillinger, Boone Jenner, and Nick Blankenburg all scored.
