Nikki Haley dubs Senate ‘privileged nursing home’ after McConnell freeze.
Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley slams Senate as “most privileged nursing home in the country”
Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley criticized the Senate on Thursday, describing it as the “most privileged nursing home in the country.” This came after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell froze during a news conference on Wednesday.
Haley acknowledged McConnell’s leadership in the Republican Party over his long tenure in the Senate but emphasized that it was time for him to step away, especially after experiencing his second recent health scare.
Haley calls for mental competency tests for government officials
During an interview with Fox News, Haley expressed her concerns about the state of the Senate and also advocated for mental competency tests for government officials and members of Congress over the age of 75. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that those making critical decisions on national security, the economy, and the border are at the top of their game.
Haley’s call for mental competency tests has been a recurring theme in her campaign, although some conservative opponents argue that voters should be the ones to determine a candidate’s mental capacity.
If such tests were required for individuals over the age of 75, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump would be obligated to take the exam.
“I think that we do need mental competency tests for anyone over the age of 75. I wouldn’t care if they did them over the age of 50,” Haley stated. “But these are people making decisions on our national security. They’re making decisions on our economy, on the border. We need to know they’re at the top of their game.”
Despite McConnell’s recent health scare, he has been cleared by the attending physician for Congress to resume his duties in the Senate. Dr. Brian Monahan, the physician, explained that McConnell’s episode was not uncommon for individuals recovering from a concussion or experiencing dehydration.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, discussions surrounding the mental fitness of government officials are likely to persist.
