Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley has announced her withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race after a disappointing performance in Super Tuesday’s primary contests, winning only in Vermont.
This decision effectively hands over the Republican nomination to former President Donald Trump, setting the stage for a potential rematch against President Joe Biden in November.
Despite her withdrawal, Haley’s campaign has stated that she will not be endorsing any candidate at this time. Instead, she will urge Trump to earn the support of Republicans and independent voters who previously supported her.
Responding to Haley’s withdrawal, Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt expressed hope that Haley would endorse Trump, emphasizing the clear choice made by voters across the country.
“It is beyond time for Nikki Haley to get out of this race and to unify around the president,” she said. “He has been saying this for weeks, really for months. And so we encourage her to do just that, to adhere to the will of Republican voters.”
Despite Trump’s dominance in the race, including in Haley’s home state of South Carolina, she had resisted pressure to drop out until now.
Initially considered a dark horse candidate, Haley gained momentum after strong performances in Republican debates last summer and fall.
“I’m not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” she said at her campaign’s watch party on the night of the South Carolina primary, adding that other states “have the right to a real choice, not a Soviet-style election with only one candidate.”
However, despite her efforts on the debate stage, Republican primary voters ultimately chose Trump over Haley in all but one primary, Vermont, on Super Tuesday.
While several other 2024 GOP candidates have pledged their support for Trump after dropping out, Haley no longer feels bound by her previous commitment to support the GOP’s nominee.
In the end, Haley’s support was not enough to overcome Trump’s stronghold within the Republican party.
Haley previously served as the UN Ambassador under the Trump administration and had three terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives.
