Nikki Haley and DeSantis tied for second in New Hampshire poll.
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) Tied for Second Place in New Hampshire Poll
According to a recent poll commissioned in the days following the first 2024 primary debate, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) are tied for second place among New Hampshire voters. While former President Donald Trump dominates the field with 47% support among likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire, Haley and DeSantis both garnered 10% support, as reported by NMB Research.
Haley’s Rise and DeSantis’s Second-Place Status
This poll reflects Haley’s rise after her attention-grabbing performance at the debate in Milwaukee, as well as DeSantis’s weakening second-place status as other candidates vie to become the top alternative to Trump. However, DeSantis remains the leading second-choice candidate, with 20% of voters selecting him as their runner-up pick in the primary race. Haley is the second choice for 15% of voters.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy both polled at 8% among survey participants, while no other presidential candidate polled above 5%. However, Ramaswamy emerged as the second-choice candidate for 18% of voters.
DeSantis’s Challenges and Haley’s Momentum
DeSantis’s campaign has faced a challenging summer, marked by staff shake-ups, campaign resets, and a decline in polling as Trump’s numbers surged. This threatens his claim to be the most capable candidate to defeat President Joe Biden in the upcoming elections. On the other hand, Haley, who has consistently polled in the single digits, has started to gain momentum following her clash with Ramaswamy over foreign policy during the debate.
However, other polls show DeSantis comfortably holding second place behind Trump and ahead of all other rivals. The RealClearPolitics poll average places Trump at 53.6%, DeSantis at 14.3%, Ramaswamy at 7.1%, and Haley at 6%.

Trump’s Hold on the Party
The Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, the first two nominating contests in the GOP primary schedule, will be crucial in determining whether Trump’s rivals can challenge his dominance in the 2024 race. However, so far, the former president’s hold on the party shows no signs of abating.
The NMB Research poll was conducted from August 25-31, after the August 23 RNC debate, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46%.
