Nintendo confirms original Mario voice actor stepping down after 25 years.
The Legendary Voice of Mario Retires
After more than 25 years, the iconic voice of Mario, Charles Martinet, has officially retired. This news was shared by the official Nintendo account on Twitter, thanking Martinet for his incredible contribution to the beloved video game character.
Martinet’s unmistakable voice has graced numerous Mario projects, including Super Mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario Galaxy, captivating fans since the 1990s.
However, Mario enthusiasts had already noticed a change in the character’s voice in the latest Super Mario Bros Wonder game. Nintendo confirmed that Martinet was not involved in the project, but assured fans that they would honor his legacy and contributions as a Mario Ambassador.

In the recent “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Martinet’s iconic voice was replaced by Chris Pratt. Pratt, who worked closely with the directors, expressed his pride in creating the perfect Mario voice for the animated film.
Pratt explained, “It’s an animated voiceover narrative. It’s not a live-action movie. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.”
To the delight of fans, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” exceeded expectations and set a new record for the most lucrative opening weekend at the box office for an animated film, surpassing “Frozen 2” (2019).
The movie achieved global box office sales of $377 million and domestic sales of $204.6 million during its opening weekend.
