No death penalty for convicted New York City bike path killer

Saipov was a 35-year old Islamic extremist. found guilty on all 28 counts — eight counts of murder, 18 counts of attempted murder, and other terrorism-related charges — in January.

Saipov was driving a rented truck along a New York City bike path on Oct. 31, 2017. Over a dozen and a quarter people were hit by the truck and eight of them were killed.

The jury had been deliberating for the past week about whether to sentence Saipov the death penalty. However, they informed the judge Monday that they couldn’t reach the unanimous verdict required under New York state law in order to bring the harsher punishment.

New York’s death penalty is very rarely used. The state has stopped capital punishment, and the last time a prisoner was executed in 1963.
