Jen Psaki: Republicans’ Criticism of Democrats on Abortion is Misleading

Jen Psaki, the former White House ​press secretary for President Joe Biden, addressed the ‍criticism from Republicans ⁢regarding ⁤Democrats’ ‍support for abortion without limitations on her MSNBC show on Sunday. She argued that their claims are “entirely misleading.”

Psaki’s response came after an X post during the first GOP presidential debate on Wednesday, where she​ stated, “No one supports abortion up ‌until birth.” However, the Washington Free Beacon has reported that⁤ Psaki ​and other fact checkers have been‌ misleading on this ⁢issue.

Abortion Legislation and ⁤Access

In ⁣2021, the ⁢Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill, supported by President ‌Biden, that allows abortion up to birth nationwide if ⁢the‌ continuation of‌ the pregnancy poses a risk to the pregnant patient’s life ⁣or health. Currently,​ seven‌ states and⁤ the District of Columbia ‌have no ⁣limits on abortion. Other states like New York and California guarantee abortion access throughout pregnancy ⁤if the mother’s health, broadly defined, ⁣is at risk.

The Democratic Party platform states: “Democrats oppose and will fight to ‌overturn federal and ‍state laws that create ‍barriers to reproductive health and rights. We will repeal the Hyde Amendment and protect and codify the right to reproductive freedom.” The ⁢Hyde Amendment ​currently prohibits federal funding for most abortions.
