Non-Citizens Allowed To Vote In Local Washington D.C. Elections: Report
Non-citizens, who have lived in Washington, D.C.Local media reported that voters who have been inactive for at least 30 consecutive days may now vote in city elections. This is after the review period was over for a new bill, which allowed such votes to take place.
D.C.’s city officials passed the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act last year on its first reading. Democratic Mayor Muriel bowser approved it without her signature as she was unable to veto. Acts of the city council, however, are subject to congressional review because the district is located in federal territory.
WAMU reported that Capitol Hill lawmakers had 30 working days to oppose the legislation. However, the House voted to prevent the bill from becoming effective. The Senate was out of time, however.
WAMU reported that the new law must still secure $1.6 million in funding for the creation of the new voter register for non-citizens. Congress has also the option to block it, specifically by prohibiting D.C. officials to spend money on its implementation.
Charles Allen, a Washington, D.C., member of the city council, introduced the bill on October 2020. He argued that the bill aligns with the chamber’s values, and the history of expanding voter rights.
“Our immigrant neighbors of all statuses participate, contribute, and care about our community in our city,” Allen spoke at the time that the vote was being held.
Councilmember Brianne Nageau, the bill’s principal sponsor, exclaimed how happy she was with the bill’s passing. “championed expanding voting rights so that those who have made the District their home have the right for their voices to be heard in our local issues, no matter their immigration status.”
The Wall Street Journal The editorial board argued that the bill grants local voting rights for illegal immigrants and foreign diplomats in a November 23 piece.
It’s a parody of progressive decadence. It is hard to imagine American diplomats showing up to vote for the mayors in Beijing and Moscow. Noncitizen voting is also prohibited. It reduces the incentive to naturalize. It is only possible for U.S. citizens to vote in federal races. In other words, including non-citizens into local races would make it difficult for election officials manage two voter lists with two sets and ballots. This is a recipe for disaster.
