‘Non-partisan’ crypto company run by Democratic donors – Washington Examiner
The article discusses the involvement of Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan in a White House event focused on digital assets, despite his claims of political neutrality. Coplan, who has donated approximately $100,000 to Democratic causes during the 2024 election cycle, has garnered attention for his assertion that Polymarket is non-partisan. Following an FBI raid on his apartment, which he characterized as political retribution, interest from right-leaning circles increased.
Despite his apolitical stance, Coplan’s donations, including funds for kamala Harris and the Democratic National Committee, reveal a strong Democratic affiliation. The article also highlights his interactions with conservative influencers and his attendance at Democratic events, like the DNC, indicating a complex relationship with both major parties. As political dynamics shift with the new administration, questions remain about Coplan’s future connections with the Democratic Party, especially given his recent praise for Trump’s approach to innovation.
‘Non-partisan’ crypto company attending White House event is run by Democratic donors
Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan, who is expected to attend Friday’s White House Digital Asset Roundtable at the invitation of President Donald Trump, donated roughly $100,000 to Democrats during the 2024 election cycle despite friends claiming Coplan is “apolitical” and his own insistence that Polymarket is “deeply committed to being non-partisan.”
Coplan’s popularity with the online Right began to grow after the FBI raided his apartment in November 2024. Polymarket, which allows users to bet on the odds of real-life events and provides related odds, called the raid “political retribution” from the Biden administration after the platform correctly predicted that Trump would win the election. An NBC News report noted that Polymarket was not supposed to have allowed users in the United States to place bets at the time.
“It’s discouraging that the current administration would seek a last-ditch effort to go after companies they deem to be associated with political opponents,” Coplan said in a statement issued after the raid. “We are deeply committed to being non-partisan, and today is no different, but the incumbents should do some self-reflecting and recognize that taking a more pro-business, pro-startup approach may be what would have changed their fate this election.”
Following the FBI investigation, a friend of Coplan named Bryan Goldberg wrote a piece for the New York Post, calling the raid a “scandal.” Goldberg described Copeland as having an “apolitical nature” and claimed that “to initiate any conversation about politics is a surefire way to drive Coplan back into his iPhone to email with his small and scrappy engineering team.”
In recent weeks, Polymarket’s X account has interacted with multiple right-wing influencers, including Kyle Rittenhouse, Zerohedge, Tucker Carlson, and Andrew Tate. Additionally, the company has touted the purported $105 billion Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has saved taxpayers, likely a considerable overestimate, and posted a joke chart suggesting that Democratic lawyer Norm Eisen is “corrupt.”
There’s more than meets the eye for Polymarket and Coplan’s neutral or right-of-center public posturing, however.
In October 2024, a Politico reporter spotted Coplan with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) at a campaign fundraiser for former Vice President Kamala Harris in New York City. Walz was then Harris’s running mate.
Federal Election Commission records show that Coplan donated roughly $100,000, split between Harris’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee during the latter months of the 2024 election. Coplan was joined in his donations by his firm’s chief marketing officer, Matthew Modabber, who also pushed about $100,000 to Harris and the DNC. The crypto executive duo sprinkled a couple thousand more dollars across various state Democratic parties and Equality PAC, a pro-LGBT committee.
Coplan did make one contribution to a Republican — $5,000 to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s effort to primary Trump.
Modabber and Coplan also attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and were photographed alongside liberal celebrities such as youth influencer Harry Sisson.
With a new party in charge of Washington, however, Coplan’s days of hobnobbing with Democrats may be on hold for now.

“This admin’s commitment to collaboration with American innovators is revitalizing the American dream,” Coplan said of the Trump administration on Thursday. “The future is bright.”
