NC Dem chairwoman urges Biden to campaign, cites Dems’ ‘showing up problem’
The Chairwoman of North Carolina’s Democratic Party Calls on President Biden to Campaign in the State
The chairwoman of North Carolina’s Democratic Party, Anderson Clayton, is urging President Joe Biden to make an appearance in the state ahead of the 2024 election. According to Clayton, the party does not have a “messaging” problem but rather a “showing up” problem.
At just 25 years old, Clayton is the youngest chair in a state Democratic Party. She believes that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris can help build excitement within the party by visiting North Carolina, a state that lacked enthusiasm during the previous presidential election and the 2022 midterm elections.
Addressing the “Showing Up” Problem
During an interview with the Washington Post Live, Clayton expressed her perspective on the Democratic Party’s challenges. She stated, “I think that the idea right now is that the Democratic Party has a messaging problem, and I really don’t believe that. I believe we have a showing up problem.”
Clayton emphasized the importance of Biden and Harris running strong on their record and generating energy and excitement on the ground in North Carolina. She believes that their presence can make a significant difference in the upcoming elections.
Key Issues for the Administration to Address
Clayton highlighted two major issues that the Biden administration could focus on in North Carolina: expanding access to the internet and reducing insulin costs. These are areas where the administration’s efforts could resonate well with voters in the state.
However, Clayton also emphasized the significance of simply visiting and campaigning in North Carolina more frequently. In the lead-up to the 2020 election, the Biden-Harris campaign only visited the state nine times, while former President Donald Trump’s campaign made approximately 18 visits with former Vice President Mike Pence.
The Importance of North Carolina
North Carolina is considered a swing state with 15 electoral votes. Despite its reputation as a purple state, the only Democratic president to win its support since 1980 has been Barack Obama. In 2020, Trump secured victory in the state by a margin of 74,481 votes.
Although both chambers of the state’s legislatures are currently Republican-controlled, Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, has demonstrated that the state is capable of electing a member of his party.
