A Devastating Tornado Strikes Pfizer Manufacturing Facility in North Carolina
A Pfizer manufacturing facility in eastern North Carolina was severely damaged on Wednesday when a powerful tornado tore through the area. The National Weather Service reported that the EF3 tornado, with winds reaching up to 150 mph, touched down north of Rocky Mount.

The Dortches-Battleboro NC Tornado was on the ground for 16.5 miles and produced peak winds of 150 mph.

The tornado caused significant damage to the Pfizer facility, as well as 89 other buildings in the storm’s path. The extent of the destruction can be seen in the images and videos shared on social media.

The storm ripped off parts of the building’s roof, causing extensive damage to the interior. Approximately 50,000 pallets of medicine were destroyed, and several storage and distribution buildings were completely demolished. The facility also lost power, which may take up to a week to restore.

Pfizer expressed its gratitude that no lives were lost in the tornado. The company is currently assessing the impact on production and is committed to rebuilding and supporting its employees, patients, and the community affected by this weather incident.
The Pfizer plant in Rocky Mount is a crucial facility, covering over 1.4 million square feet of manufacturing space on 250 acres. It is one of the largest sterile injectable facilities globally and plays a significant role in producing various medical products, including anesthesia, analgesia, therapeutics, anti-infectives, and neuromuscular blockers. The plant employs around 4,500 people.
Despite the destruction caused by the tornado, Pfizer remains dedicated to its mission of providing essential medical supplies to hospitals across the United States.
