The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of North Dakota state Senator Doug Larsen, his wife, and their two children. The crash involved a single-engine Piper aircraft.
Upon discovering the wreckage, authorities swiftly responded to the scene, including sheriff’s deputies, members of the Moab County Fire Department, and paramedics.
An NTSB spokesperson stated that an investigator would arrive at the crash site on Monday to gather evidence, including air traffic communications, radar data, weather reports, and witness testimonies. The investigator will also request maintenance records, pilot’s medical records, and flight history.
“Aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances after takeoff, Moab, UT,” stated online FAA information.
According to reports, the Larsen family was returning to North Dakota after visiting relatives in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In December 2020, Larsen’s wife, Amy, celebrated her first flight as a pilot, as shared on Facebook. However, it is unclear if she was piloting the ill-fated plane.
Larsen, a Republican, won his first election in the North Dakota Senate in the same year. He served as the chair of a Senate committee focused on business and industry issues and held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the North Dakota National Guard.
Describing himself as a “conservative, Republican outsider working for the Constituents of District 34,” Larsen’s Senate Facebook page featured a heartwarming photo of his family.
Following Larsen’s tragic passing, the Republican party will select a replacement to serve out his term until November 2024. The upcoming election will determine his Senate seat, with Republicans currently holding the majority in the North Dakota legislature.
“I’m not sure where the bereavement starts with such a tragedy, but I think it starts with prayers for the grandparents, surviving stepchild of Senator Larsen, and extended family of Doug and Amy… Hold your family close today,” said state senator majority leader David Hogue.
