US citizen detained by North Korea after crossing from South Korea.
North Korea Detains American Citizen for Unauthorized Border Crossing
Reports have emerged that North Korea has detained an American citizen who crossed over the heavily guarded border separating the country from South Korea. The individual, whose identity remains unknown, was reportedly touring the border village of Panmunjom when they entered North Korea without authorization.
The United Nations Command, in a tweet, confirmed the incident, stating, ”A U.S. National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorization, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident.”
Previous Cases Highlight the Risks
This recent incident brings to mind previous cases involving American citizens detained in North Korea. In October 2018, Bruce Byron Lowrance illegally entered North Korea from China and was held captive for 31 days. North Korea accused Lowrance of being “manipulated” by the CIA before eventually deporting him back to the United States.
Another well-known case is that of Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who was arrested in North Korea in 2016 for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years in prison but was eventually sent back to the U.S. 18 months later, after falling into a coma while in detention. Tragically, Warmbier’s parents announced his death just six days after his return home.
