North Korea to oust US soldier Travis King, state media reports.
The North Korean Government Expels U.S. Army Soldier
The North Korean government has made the decision to expel U.S. Army Pvt. 2nd Class Travis King, according to state media reports on Wednesday.
Back in July, King crossed the demarcation line from South Korea into North Korea, seemingly of his own accord. Since then, there has been limited information regarding his whereabouts and well-being.
“The relevant organ of the DPRK decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the U.S. Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK, under the law of the Republic,” state media KCNA said. The report stated that the investigation into King “has been finished.”
It remains uncertain where and when he will be expelled.
“According to the investigation by a relevant organ of the DPRK, Travis King confessed that he illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK as he harbored ill feelings towards inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. army and was disillusioned about the unequal U.S. society,” KCNA’s report added.
Initially, King was supposed to return to the United States after serving two months in prison on assault charges and spending time under U.S. supervision. However, he chose to cross the border instead, missing his flight.
A spokesperson from the Department of Defense stated that they currently have no further information to provide.
