North Korea cautions US and South Korea: Military drills may spark ‘nuclear war’.
North Korea Warns of “Thermonuclear War” Amidst U.S.-South Korea Military Drills
In a strong message to U.S. military officials, North Korean state media issued a warning on Monday, stating that the joint military drills conducted by the U.S. and South Korea could potentially lead to a catastrophic “thermonuclear war” on the Korean Peninsula. The drills involved the test-firing of strategic cruise missiles, which North Korea perceives as a simulation of war.
The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, a computer-simulated command post exercise, aims to ensure the readiness of the Alliance in defending the Republic of Korea and promoting security in Northeast Asia. However, North Korea has consistently viewed these drills as a provocation and a potential trigger for war.
“A thermo-nuclear war, the first ever in history, is more than likely on the Korean peninsula,” warned the KCNA news agency.
This warning comes in the wake of a recent meeting between the leaders of the U.S., South Korea, and Japan at Camp David in Maryland. The leaders convened to establish their first stand-alone trilateral agreements, known as the “Camp David Principles,” as a response to the increasing threats posed by China and North Korea in the Pacific region.
“The purpose of our trilateral security cooperation is and will remain to promote and enhance peace and stability throughout the region,” stated U.S. President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in a joint statement.
As part of their agreements, the allied nations have agreed to bolster their ballistic missile defenses to counter North Korea’s nuclear missile capabilities.
North Korean state media characterized the summit between the allied nations as a “nuclear war provocation,” suggesting that implementing the agreements made at Camp David during the military drills could escalate the possibility of a thermonuclear war on the Korean Peninsula.
According to NBC, North Korea has conducted over 100 weapons tests, including nuclear-capable missiles targeting the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, since the beginning of last year.
“The armed forces of North Korea will wait for a chance to punish the hostile forces threatening our state’s sovereignty and our people’s right to live,” stated the state-run commentary.
Reuters reported that the Japanese Coast Guard revealed North Korea’s plan to launch a satellite between August 24 and August 31, directed towards the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea.
South Korean lawmakers have expressed concerns that North Korea may respond to the joint military drills and the recent summit with the U.S. and Japan by test-firing an intercontinental ballistic missile, showcasing their military strength.
