US says North Korea’s Kim Jong Un may meet Russia’s Putin for arms talks.
Kim Jong Un, the top leader of communist North Korea, is actively pursuing a potential arms deal with the Kremlin. There are indications that he may even meet with President Vladimir Putin in Russia. This exciting development has been revealed through intelligence obtained by the United States.
The negotiations between North Korea and Russia are progressing, according to National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson. She stated, “Arms negotiations between North Korea and Russia are actively advancing.” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently visited North Korea to discuss the possibility of purchasing artillery ammunition from Pyongyang.
“We have information that Kim Jong-Un expects these discussions to continue, to include leader-level diplomatic engagement in Russia,” said Watson. The exact timing of the meeting has not been specified, but according to unnamed U.S. and allied officials cited by The New York Times, the meeting between Kim and Putin could take place as early as next week.
The Kremlin has chosen not to comment on the potential meeting between the two leaders. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, simply stated, “There’s nothing to say.”
Secret Negotiations for Weapons
Following the visit of Russian Defense Minister Shoigu to Pyongyang, Kim and Putin exchanged letters pledging to enhance their bilateral cooperation, according to Kirby. Washington’s intelligence suggests that discussions about possible arms deals continued during a recent visit of Russian officials to Pyongyang.
“We’re going to keep watching it closely through a variety of means of intelligence,” Kirby added.
Deepened Defense Cooperations
South Korea’s spy agency suggests that Shoigu may have proposed trilateral military drills involving China. However, Russia’s ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, stated that he is not aware of any plans for North Korea to participate in such drills. Nevertheless, he believes it would be appropriate given the U.S.-led exercises in the region.
The United States has recently imposed sanctions on three entities believed to be involved in arms deals between North Korea and Russia.
