The border between New York State and Canada is being defended by local sheriffs who are asking for more United States Border Patrol personnel to respond to the growing refugee crisis.
Nearly ten times as many illegal border crossings are occurring in this area and along the northern border than at the beginning 2022. There are concerns about the freezing temperatures that can be found along the border, which could lead to the death of those crossing.
An estimated 2,000 migrants crossed the border from Canada to New Hampshire, Vermont and New York between the beginning of October, and the end February. The number of migrants crossing the border at the same moment in 2022 was approximately 200. This is a dramatic rise.
Migrants who crossed the border to the north were mostly from Mexico. They believed it would be easier for them to cross the border from Canada, when they were prevented from crossing the southern border. They traveled to Canada to reunite their families and obtained a visa.
Clinton County Sheriff David Favro of New York had helped Border Patrol agents to rescue more than 39 migrants between March 11 and 11.Th 13Th. Due to the cold temperatures, some migrants had their clothes frozen.
Sheriff Favro stated that such rescues have put a strain on his department’s resources. Because his department has a population around 80,000, it is already stretched thin and shares only 30 miles of bordering Canada’s northern border, Favro called for more Border Patrol officers.
“We are seeing more and more people, and it can be a deadly terrain if you’re not familiar with it,” Favro said. “The only way to really be able to cover and protect [the northern border] is boots on the ground.”
Since Friday, March 10ThTo deter illegal crossings, the Swanton Sector border patrol added 25 additional agents. Sheriff Favro, however, believes that it isn’t enough and that more people are needed.
According to Border Patrol officials the Swanton Sector has been one of the busiest areas on the northern frontier. In total, 67% of all crossings have been made through the Swanton Sector.
The United States’ north border is the longest international land boundary in the world. The boundary line stretches for 5,000 miles and includes both the U.S.-Canada border as well as Alaska’s borders. It is staffed by approximately 2,000 Border Patrol officers, while the border of 2,000 miles between the U.S.A and Mexico has more than 16,000 CBP personnel.
Todd Gumlaw, chief of Mooers Fire said that he had recently assisted in the rescue of two Mexican migrant women stuck in an icy swamp. The authorities were able provide first aid and transport the women to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia and frostbite.
“Preservation of human life is first and foremost with my department,” The fire chief stated.
The increase in migrant crossings have also had an impact on the Mooers-Champlain community.
One resident of Mooers said she had been visited by migrants at her home. She expressed concern about her family’s safety and is saving money for security cameras.
“It’s not something I would usually do,” April Barcomb spoke to NBC News. “But it makes me think twice. And with the kids and the family, I gotta install cameras.”
“People are scared,” Champlain County resident during interview “It’s the fear of the unknown. They’re [neighbors] worried about their safety, because they don’t know these people.”
On Monday, Governor Chris Sununu, R-N.H., wrote to Alejandro Mayorkas, Security Secretary, requesting him to strengthen the enforcement of the 51-mile border that his state shares, or allow local authorities the right to do so.
“The Biden Administration has cut funding and hindered the state’s ability to assist in patrolling the northern border,” Let the letter be read. “If the Biden Administration truly believes that securing the border is a priority, I hope you will partner with the State of New Hampshire to make this a reality.”
Sununu’s latest budget proposal also includes $1.4 million to create a Border Alliance Program. This program would create a taskforce to stop illegal immigration from his state.
Border Patrol agents from the northern part of the country have taken large quantities of illegally crossed drugs.
Raul Ortiz from the Border Patrol reported that 1,500 pounds of narcotics was seized within a week. The drugs were being smuggled across the northern border to Buffalo.
The Governor’s request has been ignored by the Border Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security. Officials claim that the Border Patrol recently sent agents will help to deter migration.
