Not A Joke: John Kerry Is Worried War In Ukraine Will Distract World Leaders From Climate Change

In less than a minute, John Kerry — President Joe Biden’s climate czar — recently illuminated his relative lack of knowledge of both geopolitical events and international threats this past Monday in an interview that is being widely mocked on the internet. First, he admitted he thought countries like Russia weren’t willing start a war to gain new land and second, he stressed his concern that a war in Ukraine will distract Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and other world leaders from focusing on tackling climate change.

In an interview set to air on BBC UK, the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) flagged that Kerry told the foreign news outlet that he was “concerned about Ukraine because of the people of Ukraine and because of the principles that are at risk, in terms of international law and trying to change boundaries of international law by force.”

“I thought we lived in a world that had said no to that kind of activity. And I hope diplomacy will win,” he stated.

Kerry continued, shifting gears to discuss the true threat teaching the world today — in his mind anyway — climate change.

“But it could have a profound negative impact on the climate obviously,” Kerry said about looming war with Russia, per Fox News. “You have a war and obviously you’re going to have massive emissions consequences to the war. But equally important, you’re going to lose people’s focus, you’re going to lose certainly big country attention because they will be diverted and I think it could have a damaging impact.”

“So, you know, I think hopefully President Putin would realize that in the northern part of his country, they used to live on 66% of the nation that was over frozen land,” Kerry explained, zeroing in on why Russia should care about global warming, “Now it’s thawing. And his infrastructure is at risk, and the people of Russia are at risk, and so I hope President Putin will help us to stay on track with respect for what we need to do for the climate.”

His comments can be seen here:

In reaction, dozens of comments on Twitter blasted Kerry for comments.

“Leftist John Kerry is worried that dead Ukrainians will distract from the real problem, the climate!” Townhall columnist and attorney Marina Medvin said, “Yes, seriously. He wants Russia to know that warmer climate is their biggest threat. Yes. He said this.”

“There is a reason John Kerry is a laughable joke in the state of Massachusetts nowadays and the reason is obvious below: caring about climate change more than the loss of lives is silly in the moment. it’s even more silly when you personally bow down to tyrants,” Twitter user @TheFactualPrep tweeted.

Christina Pushaw, a spokeswoman for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), added that it was Kerry’s ideology that led to the Ukraine war in the first place.

“This clown, his ideology, and everything he represents helped cause this entire debacle, so maybe he should sit this one out,” Pushaw tweeted.

Kerry currently serves as a representative for the U.S. on the global stage in a very particular role. As reported by The New York Times in 2020, as U.S. climate czar, Kerry flies around from country to country, hoping to change world leaders’ hearts and minds about the pressing issue of climate change:

On Monday, President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. said he would name Mr. Kerry his special presidential envoy for climate, creating a new cabinet-level position. In that role, Mr. Kerry will need to convince skeptical global leaders — burned by the Trump administration’s hostility toward climate science and its rejection of the 2015 Paris Agreement — that the United States not only is prepared to resume its leadership role but will also stay the course, regardless of the Biden administration’s future.

So far, it seems that Kerry has failed in convincing Putin to pause and think about climate change as the Russian president continues to wage war on Ukraine, targeting civilians and military structure alike. Kerry, the former U.S. Secretary of State, Massachusetts senator, and failed 2004 presidential candidate, talks the talk on reducing fossil fuels but does not necessarily walk the walk. His family has come under scrutiny for his family owning a private jet and taking at least 16  private flights, burning gasoline across the globe.

Kerry has defended his use of private jets — such as the one he took to accept an award in Iceland for heroic efforts for the planet — by saying “If you offset your carbon, it’s the only choice for somebody like me who is traveling the world to win this battle.”

Perhaps Kerry can convince the United Nations to sell Putin some carbon credits to help offset his carbon from his new “special military operation,” as Putin calls his full-scale invasion.
