‘No blank check for you’: Chip Roy urges Mayorkas to ‘do your job’
Rep. Chip Roy Calls for Accountability from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas
During a recent interview with News Nation, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) expressed his determination to hold Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable. Roy emphasized that he would not simply ”give him a blank check” and highlighted his concerns about the security situation along the southern border.
According to Roy, Mayorkas has been dishonest about the state of security and Texas is facing constant threats. The congressman shared distressing stories he receives regularly about migrant children being held in sex trafficking operations. He also revealed that six children in his school district have tragically lost their lives due to fentanyl poisoning.
Republican Debate: Can the Debates Help Winnow the GOP Field?
Asserting the importance of responsibility, Roy stated, “What we’re talking about is saying if you want funding, do your damn job.” He emphasized that the House of Representatives holds the power of the purse and questioned why he should allocate more funds to Mayorkas, whom he accused of lying under oath and neglecting the safety of Texans.
Roy clarified that he would provide funding to the Department of Homeland Security but with conditions. He intends to “attach strings” to the funding, urging Mayorkas to fulfill his duties. The congressman stressed that the Republican Party cannot campaign on border security and then neglect their core responsibility of utilizing their power of the purse to drive the desired changes within the administration.
In a “Dear Colleague” letter earlier this month, Roy outlined a series of demands that must be met for him to support legislation funding DHS or vote for a continuing resolution. These demands primarily focus on tightening security at the southern border, which Roy considers a “national crisis.”
Mayorkas has faced criticism from conservatives and Republican lawmakers for his handling of the border situation. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) even accused him of “doing the bidding” of Mexican drug cartels.
On August 16, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) summoned Mayorkas to appear on Capitol Hill in October for a hearing on border security. The hearing will specifically examine the actions and policies implemented since January 2021 and their impact on the border and the country as a whole.
House Republicans initiated an investigation in June to determine whether Mayorkas neglected his duties during the border crisis, which has seen approximately 7 million noncitizens attempting to enter the country unlawfully. The findings from this investigation could potentially lead to an impeachment inquiry against Mayorkas.
