Notre Dame supports Drag Show, says it aligns with Church teachings.
From Joke to Mainstream: The Rise of Drag and Cross-Dressing
Once the punchline of jokes, drag and cross-dressing have undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. What was once considered comedic fodder, showcased in movies like “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Juwanna Mann,” has now become normalized and even celebrated.
However, this shift has raised concerns among those who grew up in the 90s, who assumed that drag and cross-dressing would remain on the fringes of society, even if they became more accepted.
But as it turns out, assumptions can be misleading.
Drag and cross-dressing have not only moved away from the fringes of society, but they have also infiltrated some of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in America. Take, for example, the University of Notre Dame, a Catholic academic community that recently faced backlash for hosting and promoting a drag show on its campus.
The upcoming event, titled “What a Drag: Drag on Screen – Variations and Meanings,” is not just a performance but also a symposium on the history of drag. This move has sparked resistance from students who see it as a violation of their Catholic doctrine.
Despite the protest, the university’s response has been unsatisfactory. The school president, Father John Jenkins, defended the event under the guise of academic freedom, stating that even objectionable content should be allowed.
Even more concerning is the response from Pam Wojcik, the chair of the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre at Notre Dame. She not only defended drag but also seemed to imply that opposition to it is driven by Republicans.
Wojcik’s statements are not only tone-deaf but also disregard the Church’s teachings on the matter. The Bible is clear in Deuteronomy 22:5 that cross-dressing is considered an abomination.
Despite the evidence, Wojcik insists that drag is not anti-Catholic and has a long tradition. She believes that the class on drag is an opportunity for students to learn about it in an intellectual environment, free from the hysteria she perceives from Republicans.
While it’s important to acknowledge that not all faculty members at Notre Dame share this viewpoint, the fact that such a show is being promoted at a faith-driven university raises questions about its commitment to its Catholic identity.
This entire drag show debacle highlights the school’s lack of understanding when it comes to biblical truths and further solidifies its reputation as just another far-left bastion masquerading as a ”Catholic academic community.”

How has the LGBTQ+ rights movement contributed to the rise of drag and cross-dressing in mainstream society?
As no intention of disrespecting the teachings of the Church. She argues that drag can be seen as a form of artistic expression and self-empowerment, with performers challenging societal norms and expectations.
The rise of drag and cross-dressing in mainstream society can be attributed to various factors. One of the key drivers is the LGBTQ+ rights movement, which has fought tirelessly for equality and acceptance. As a result, society has become more open-minded and inclusive, allowing for the flourishing of drag and cross-dressing as valid forms of self-expression.
Popular culture has also played a significant role in the normalization of drag and cross-dressing. Television shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” have gained widespread popularity, bringing drag into the living rooms of millions of viewers. Drag queens have become recognizable figures, celebrated for their talent, charisma, and unique fashion sense.
Furthermore, the fashion industry has embraced the aesthetics of drag and cross-dressing. Designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood have incorporated elements of drag into their collections, pushing boundaries and challenging traditional gender norms.
It is important to recognize that drag and cross-dressing are not solely limited to the LGBTQ+ community. Straight individuals have also been actively involved in these art forms, highlighting the inclusivity and diversity that they represent.
However, the rise of drag and cross-dressing has not been without its challenges. There are still pockets of resistance and prejudice that persist, particularly in conservative and religious communities. Just as the University of Notre Dame faced backlash for hosting a drag show, similar incidents have occurred in other institutions and communities.
Nevertheless, the overall trend is clear - drag and cross-dressing are moving from the margins to the center of mainstream society. They are no longer jokes or taboos but are instead celebrated for their creativity, artistry, and ability to challenge societal norms.
As society progresses, it is essential to embrace and respect diverse forms of self-expression. Drag and cross-dressing have proven to be powerful tools for dismantling stereotypes, promoting acceptance, and celebrating the beauty of individuality. From the stage to the runway, these art forms have come a long way, and their journey is far from over.
