NPR CEO’s ‘blowout’ on Capitol Hill spotlights ‘easy’ waste to cut: Joe Concha

The Washington Examiner’s Joe Concha reflected on NPR CEO Katherine Maher’s “generally hilarious” defense of her company on Wednesday, saying that one “almost felt sorry for her” during her congressional testimony.

House Republicans criticized Maher’s previous comments on social media, including her comments calling for reparations and her reference to President Donald Trump as a “deranged racist sociopath.” Concha, a senior writer for the Washington Examiner, joked that Maher’s “blowout” testimony was laughable, claiming that her previous views and social media posts had a bearing on NPR’s editorial process.

“I mean, go listen to NPR for 3 minutes. Trust me, you’ll have a decidedly different opinion,” Concha argued on Fox News’s Hannity. “And if any of the folks from DOGE are watching this and were watching today, Elon, if you’re looking for some waste that could be really easy to cut, look no further than MS-NPR and MS-PBS. And as you just showed, Sean, its CEO Katherine Maher, was a human Chornobyl on Capitol Hill today!”

Concha then asked “the big question” that Maher’s testimony raised. Why should taxpayer dollars go to either NPR or PBS? He pointed to how data indicates the majority of the network’s audience is “consistently liberal.” Concha also suggested that the pair be “solvent on their own” and not undergo any more handholding from the U.S. government.

Fox News host Sean Hannity speculated that Maher’s comments on her views evolving over the last five years stem from an “election year conversion” and that she is simply saying “anything to save” her job. Concha agreed, noting how Maher’s thought process on seatbelts and doorways contributing to “fatphobia” disappeared.

“In the end, elections have consequences and the fact that Donald Trump and J.D. Vance are in office, and Elon Musk for that matter and what he’s doing of DOGE, it’s a very good bet that the taxpayer spigot is about to end at NPR and PBS, and it can’t happen soon enough, Sean,” Concha stated.

Beyond attempting to backtrack on her call for reparations and expressing regret for her comments about Trump, Maher also admitted that NPR made mistakes in its coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop story and the origins of COVID-19.

Trump advocated that NPR and PBS be defunded “IMMEDIATELY,” urging Republican lawmakers not to “miss this opportunity.” He called both outlets “horrible and completely biased platforms” that work as “arms of the Radical Left Democrat Party.”
