NPR has come under fire this week for appearing to contradict the biological differences between males and females, in a move that supports biological men competing against females in athletics.
NPR opposed an international governing body’s decision to ban trans athletes from female competition, stating:
“The international governing body for track and field will ban trans women athletes from elite women’s competitions, citing a priority for fairness over inclusion, despite limited scientific research involving elite trans athletes.”
NPR’s statement received widespread backlash from those who believe that men and women are not biologically equal, which led to the outlet issuing a correction:
“Correction: An earlier tweet incorrectly stated there is limited scientific evidence of physical advantage. Existing research shows that higher levels of testosterone do impact athletic performance. But there’s limited research involving elite trans athletes in competition,” NPR’s official Twitter account noted on Sunday afternoon.”
While NPR’s response was criticised for being only a half-correction, many people point out that there is ample scientific proof that men have a definite physical advantage over women. Orthopedic surgeon Mary O’Connor, for example, stated recently that the sex differences between males and females actually start in utero and are then accelerated during puberty due to testosterone. Consequently, men are generally bigger, stronger, have greater heart and lung capacity, and have stronger bones than women.
According to O’Connor, “there is absolutely a physical advantage. There’s no question the science is clear.”
Former mediocre male swimmer Lia Thomas who rewrote the record books in female competition highlights the issue. NPR could be better served by believing in the women who have had to play with or against transgender women.
Women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines recently revealed that girls had to change naked in a locker room with Thomas, who strutted around with male genitalia. It begs the question: does NPR truly require a scientific study to assess the potential consequences of sweaty biological men showering with women?
Meanwhile, Joe Rogan pointed out that transgender participation in women’s sports is an injustice for female athletes who work hard, pushing themselves to the limits of their abilities.
In conclusion, while NPR says that limited research exists in the area, orthopedic surgeon Mary O’Connor and other experts have pointed out that there is, in fact, significant scientific evidence that biological men have a physical advantage over women in sports.
