NRCC criticizes Spanberger’s ‘radical voting record’, dismisses her as a ‘moderate’.
NRCC Slams Rep. Abigail Spanberger for “Radical Voting Record” Despite Claiming to be a Moderate
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is calling out Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) for her alleged “radical voting record” in the House of Representatives, despite presenting herself as a moderate. In an exclusive memo obtained by the Washington Examiner, the NRCC cites the D.C. crime bill and other legislation as evidence that Spanberger is more extreme than she portrays.
“Abigail Spanberger talks like a so-called ‘moderate’ but her voting record tells a different story,” the memo states. “Throughout her time in Congress, Spanberger has aligned herself with the extreme left of her party, reflecting the hard-left shift of Virginia Democrats.”
The NRCC claims that Spanberger’s leftward shift has alienated voters in her swing district, and they have targeted her seat for the 2024 cycle. The memo highlights Spanberger’s voting record in the previous Congress, where she voted in line with President Joe Biden 100% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight. It also points out her votes against blocking a gas stove ban, reducing energy production regulations, ensuring medical care for babies born after failed abortions, and protecting parental rights in education. Additionally, the memo highlights her vote in favor of a pathway to amnesty for illegal immigrants.
As a case study, the memo focuses on Spanberger’s vote against blocking a crime bill in Washington, D.C., which aimed to soften punishments for homicide, robberies, and carjackings. The House bill to block the D.C. council’s legislation passed with a 250-173 vote, with 31 Democrats joining Republicans. Spanberger was among the 173 Democrats who voted against blocking the D.C. law. The Senate also voted overwhelmingly to block the legislation on a bipartisan basis, and President Biden would have signed it into law.
“Notably, this stance was too extreme even for President Biden, who ultimately changed his position and signed the bill into law,” the memo points out. ”By voting ‘no,’ Spanberger demonstrated her radicalism to voters, showing that even within the Democratic Party, her views are extreme.”
The NRCC argues that Spanberger’s support for this bill will have real-life consequences for her own district, especially since Washington, D.C. is in her backyard. They also highlight that both of Virginia’s Senators, Warner and Kaine, voted against the legislation, further emphasizing the extreme nature of Spanberger’s vote.
The NRCC accuses Spanberger of sacrificing her carefully crafted brand with her voting record in Congress. They vow to continue pressing her on her alleged radicalism and ensure that every Virginia voter knows the “real” Abigail Spanberger.

Spanberger has been a prime target for Republicans since she flipped a formerly GOP House seat in 2018. The NRCC has listed her as one of 37 House Democrats they aim to defeat in 2024. Despite facing challenges from Republicans Nick Freitas and Yesli Vega in 2020 and 2022 respectively, Spanberger managed to secure narrow victories in both elections.
