NRSC calls on troubled Democrats to denounce Biden’s criticism of affirmative action ruling.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee Calls on Democrats to Speak Out Against Biden’s Condemnation of Supreme Court Decision
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is urging embattled Democrats to publicly denounce President Joe Biden’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on affirmative action. The high court, in a 6-3 decision, banned the consideration of race in college admissions, overturning the landmark 1978 case Regents of the University of California v. Bakke.
“Democrats are doubling down on their racist agenda and want to pack the Supreme Court to get their way,” said NRSC spokesman Philip Letsou. “Will Democrats like Joe Manchin, Jon Tester, and Sherrod Brown denounce Joe Biden’s support of racial discrimination and state unequivocally that they oppose packing the court?”
While most Democrats have swiftly criticized the ruling, several prominent members of the party, including Senators Joe Manchin, Jon Tester, and Sherrod Brown, have yet to respond.
The NRSC also condemned President Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for their initial reactions to the ruling, accusing them of immediately attacking the Supreme Court and advocating for the reinstatement of race-based college admissions.
In his statement, President Biden expressed strong disagreement with the court’s decision, emphasizing that affirmative action did not mean admitting unqualified applicants. He encouraged colleges to continue considering the adversity students have overcome and reiterated the existence of racism in the country.
“I believe our colleges are stronger when they’re racially diverse,” Biden stated. “We cannot let this decision be the last word.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer characterized the ruling as a “giant roadblock” to achieving racial justice in the United States. He expressed concern about the immediate and long-term consequences for students of color, who may face reduced opportunities in college admissions.
