Former President Donald Trump, on August 31, entered a plea of not guilty in the Georgia election case. He also decided to waive his in-person court appearance in Fulton County, which was scheduled for next Wednesday. Trump’s attorney, Steven Sadow, has formally requested the judge to separate his case from his co-defendants’, who are seeking a speedy trial. Sadow argues that he needs more time to adequately prepare Trump’s defense, stating that the trial date of October 23, 2023, does not allow sufficient time for preparation.
Georgia Governor Rejects Plea to Remove District Attorney
Meanwhile, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has rejected a plea from state Republicans to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. This decision comes amidst ongoing controversies surrounding the election case.
Proud Boys Leader Sentenced for Capitol Breach
A federal judge has sentenced Joseph Randall Biggs, the leader of the Proud Boys, to 17 years in prison. The judge deemed the destruction of a fence on U.S. Capitol property during the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach as an act of terrorism. Biggs’ co-defendant, Zachary Rehl, received a 15-year sentence. These sentences are lower than what federal prosecutors had sought, which were 33 years and 30 years respectively.
Supreme Court Justice Discloses Undisclosed Gifts
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has filed a disclosure form revealing previously undisclosed gifts from his friend, GOP donor, and billionaire Harlan Crow. This disclosure comes amidst ongoing criticism from Democrats in Congress regarding alleged ethical shortcomings within the nation’s highest court.
