Nuclear agency struggles to rescind firings of important staff – Washington Examiner
The National Nuclear Security Management (NNSA) has encountered difficulties in contacting certain employees who were recently dismissed, to inform them that their terminations have been rescinded. These layoffs occurred shortly after a significant geopolitical incident, specifically a Russian drone strike on the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine. The NNSA sent out an email explaining that due to lacking personal contact facts for the affected employees, they could not directly reach them after their federal email accounts were disabled. The agency urged staff to relay the message through supervisors to the employees’ personal emails. This situation highlights broader issues related to mass firings that occurred under the Trump administration, which particularly targeted “probationary” employees within federal agencies, including Homeland Security. These actions have sparked considerable opposition and lead to numerous lawsuits against the administration for overreach.
Nuclear agency struggles to contact fired employees to inform them their termination was rescinded
Officials from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) have struggled to contact some employees recently fired, informing them that their terminations had been rescinded.
On Friday, NNSA sent an email to staff, explaining that the termination letters for certain probationary employees were being reversed. However, officials noted they did not have the personal contact information for these individuals. These employees were laid off on Thursday and lost access to their federal government email accounts, making it difficult for NNSA to directly reach them. As a result, the agency urged recipients of the message to collaborate with supervisors to forward the information to the employees’ personal emails once they obtained it.

“The termination letters for some NNSA probationary employees are being rescinded, but we do not have a good way to get in touch with those personnel,” the email sent by NNSA officials, which was obtained by NBC News, reads.
NNSA, which is part of the Department of Energy and manages the U.S. nuclear stockpile, found itself on the receiving end of the Trump administration”s mass firings which primarily targeted employees targeted as “probationary.”
The Thursday firings occurred within hours of a Russian drone striking the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine. It is part of the NNSA’s responsibility to track nuclear risks in Ukraine.
This incident follows mass layoffs throughout federal agencies. In addition to the NNSA layoffs, the Department of Homeland Security also saw significant cuts, with more than 400 employees let go. These actions are part of a broader push by President Donald Trump and adviser Elon Musk to reduce the size of the federal workforce.
The administration’s efforts have sparked significant opposition, with Democrats, labor unions, and progressive groups voicing their concerns. Over 60 lawsuits have been filed against the Trump administration, accusing it of overreach and other violations.
