Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. This marks the first time in American history that a US President has been charged with a crime.
The grand jury’s decision pertains to an alleged payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, whom Trump is alleged to have had an affair with. The payment, which amounted to $130,000, was made to Daniels by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, during the 2016 presidential campaign, in exchange for her silence about her affair with Trump.
Cohen has claimed that he initially paid Daniels with his own money, but was later reimbursed by the Trump Organization under the guise of legal expenses. This led the Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, to charge Cohen with falsifying business records.
Following the news, Trump released a statement in which he referred to the investigation as a “political witch-hunt trying to take down the leading candidate, by far, in the Republican Party.”
Trump continues to deny the affair and maintains that he has done nothing wrong.
In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to charges related to the Daniels payment and was imprisoned for three years.
After the announcement, Cohen released a statement on social media.
Some insiders have suggested that the grand jury would take over a month to reach a consensus, but the decision was made on Thursday. At present, the exact crimes President Trump has been charged with remain unclear because the indictment is still sealed.
If convicted, Trump could face up to four years in prison.
