NYC approves installing more ‘noise cameras’ to fine drivers for loud and honking cars

New York City is looking to expand its effort to punish drivers by fining them up to $2,500 for having loud cars or excessive honking.

The city has seven noise cameras, at the price tag of $35,000 each, and plans to install more by the end of the year — at least five per borough.

The noise cameras are activated by a sound louder than 85 decibels, and ticket fines range between $800 and $2,500.

The New York City Council approved on Wednesday a bill, dubbed the “Stop Spreading the Noise” Act, which targets illegal mufflers and exhaust systems.

So far, the Big Apple has had 218 violations for drivers with vehicles with modified mufflers and 147 violations for excessively honking.

One attorney cautioned that noise cameras could be “ripe for abuse.”

“Whenever you have new technology that is capable of doing these types of things, it’s ripe for abuse. There are legitimate concerns,” said Jerome Greco, an attorney with the Legal Aid Society.
