NYC Avenue plagued by prostitutes soliciting openly, even targeting children, while police remain inactive.

Brothels Overrun ⁣New York City Street in Broad Daylight

Residents ‌of a New York City ⁣neighborhood are facing a disturbing problem as brothels take⁢ over their streets, operating openly during the ⁢day. The ‌situation has ⁤left ‌locals frustrated and‍ concerned, especially as aggressive⁣ prostitutes loiter outside and even approach children.

Nearly a dozen brothels have set up shop on Roosevelt Avenue near Junction Boulevard‌ in the Corona ‌neighborhood of Queens, according to a report by the New York Post. These establishments are not limited to weekend nights;‌ they‍ are⁣ active throughout‌ the week.

The illicit operations offer various services, with⁢ one “sex worker” advertising a “happy ending” massage for $40, while another offers “full-body massages” for $80, as ⁣reported by the ‌Post.

Residents have also expressed concerns about intoxicated men‍ seeking services from ⁤the prostitutes, ⁢creating⁣ an uncomfortable environment in the area, as stated in the New York⁤ Post.

The presence⁢ of these brothels has caused ‌distress among⁣ mothers ⁤in the neighborhood, who claim that the prostitutes even recruit local children to distribute their explicit business cards, some of which feature suggestive‍ images of scantily clad⁢ women.

In response⁢ to‌ this alarming situation, a‍ group of approximately 20 mothers has formed the Community of Young Values and Principles in Corona, aiming to combat the exploitation of their children by the sex trade.

One woman working at a ⁢cell phone store on the avenue expressed her frustration, saying, “The police do ‍nothing — nothing! Drugs, prostitution, alcohol — it’s terrible.”

Another local‍ mother, ⁣who has six children,⁢ including‍ a 14-year-old, an 8-year-old, and a‍ 5-year-old, shared her concerns ⁤about the aggressive tactics used by the prostitutes, stating, “They‍ try to ‍pull them in and sell them their services. Even the kids! ‌They’re‍ really forceful about it.”

Meanwhile, the NYPD has shifted its focus in recent years, reducing the number of arrests of prostitutes and instead targeting the “johns” ‍who purchase sex, as reported ⁣by PIX11.

In 2020, only ⁣96 prostitutes were‌ arrested in New York ⁤City, ⁣a significant decrease from the 1,790‍ arrests ⁣made in 2014⁤ and a far cry from the nearly⁤ 20,000 arrests made in 1985, according to Gothamist.

Advocates are concerned that Central American and Asian women ⁢are particularly vulnerable to sex trafficking. Taina ‍Bien-Aime, the executive director⁢ of the Coalition Against Trafficking in‍ Women, warned about trafficking⁤ cartels from Mexico and Central America‍ bringing women into Queens‌ and parts⁣ of Brooklyn, as ⁤reported by the New York Post.

Some of ‌these brothels even advertise their⁢ services⁢ on YouTube, targeting Spanish-speaking audiences with videos showing women soliciting men on the⁣ sidewalks of Roosevelt Avenue and stating their ⁢prices for ‌sexual‌ services.

Despite efforts to combat the ⁤issue, with the Queens district attorney shutting down at least six alleged brothels through nuisance laws, residents⁤ claim that many brothels ‌are still operating ⁢in the ⁤borough. They⁤ also criticize the police for focusing more on street vendors selling food than ‍on the⁣ prostitutes openly selling sex, as reported by the New York Post.

In‌ response to these ⁣concerns, the NYPD stated, “We ‍have significantly reduced the number of arrests for prostitution itself as we work in ⁣every case to connect the‍ victims of ⁢human trafficking ⁣with the‍ services they need. We have also worked⁤ to ‌proactively deter individual buyers of sex. Yet prostitution in all forms remains prohibited by law.”

New York City Faces Multiple Challenges

In addition to the issue of brothels, New York City is grappling with a rise in ⁢homelessness⁣ and certain types of violent crime, such as⁢ car⁣ thefts and felony assault. While murder, rape, and robbery have decreased this year, there⁢ have been over 1,300 ‍more car thefts and approximately 800 more felony assaults compared to the same‌ period last year, as reported by the NYPD.
