NYC Dems reveal vending machine for crack pipes.
New York City Democrats Deploy Vending Machines to Combat Drug Overdoses
“Every three hours, we’re losing a New Yorker [to drugs],” said Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan. “And it looks like 2022 is on track to be our highest year ever in overdoses.”
New York City is taking a bold step in the fight against drug overdoses by deploying vending machines that dispense free drug paraphernalia, including crack pipes, Narcan, drug-test strips, “safe-smoking” pipes, condoms, nicotine gum, lip balm, and tampons. The machines will be placed in the city’s worst neighborhoods for drug use, and users can simply enter their zip code to receive the items for free.
What’s in the Vending Machines?
- Narcan and drug-test strips
- “Safe-smoking” pipes
- Condoms
- Nicotine gum
- Lip balm
- Tampons
The vending machines will also have “safer sniffing” and “safer smoking” kits. Health officials hope that by providing these items for free, they can reduce the spread of diseases like HIV and hepatitis C, as well as prevent overdoses.
New York City saw 2,668 drug deaths in 2021, and officials expect 2022 to break the previous record. By providing free drug paraphernalia and other items, the city hopes to reduce the number of deaths and improve the health of its citizens.
