NYC Mayor cuts budget, including NYPD, to address migrant crisis.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams Announces Billions in Budget Cuts Due to Migrant Crisis
New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a significant announcement on Saturday, revealing budget cuts amounting to billions of dollars. These cuts are a response to the rising costs associated with the influx of tens of thousands of migrants into the city.
All city agencies will be required to reduce spending by 5% starting in November and 15% by next spring. While these budget cuts will not result in layoffs, they will involve a hiring freeze.
The impact of these budget cuts, some of the most significant in years, will be felt across various sectors, including New York’s public schools, the NYPD, the fire department, sanitation, and the mayor’s office.
New York City currently operates on a $107 billion budget.
“The simple truth is that longtime New Yorkers and asylum-seekers will feel the effects of these potential cuts, and they will be painful,” Adams stated passionately in a speech on Saturday. “New Yorkers are angry and frustrated, and they have every right to be. I share their sentiments.”

Migrant Crisis Puts Strain on New York City’s Resources
Since last year, over 110,000 migrants have arrived in New York City, with 60,000 still being housed at the city’s expense. This influx has caused New York’s homeless shelters to reach their breaking point.
The city has already spent more than $1.2 billion on accommodating the migrants, and projections indicate that this figure could rise to $5 billion.
“Everything is on the table now,” Adams explained in an interview with Pix11 regarding the budget cuts. He emphasized that New York City has been “ignored” in addressing the migrant issue.
Last week, Adams issued a warning about the impending budget cuts, highlighting the city’s $10 billion deficit and the need to reduce services across the board.
Furthermore, Adams expressed grave concern about the migrant crisis, stating, “This issue will destroy New York City.” He emphasized that every community in the city will be impacted by the ongoing situation.

Blame Game and Consequences
As the migrant crisis intensifies, Adams has pointed fingers at various parties, including Texas, the White House, and New York’s state government, for burdening the city with this emergency.
“The president and the White House have failed New York City on this issue,” Adams asserted in April, specifically mentioning President Biden.
While Biden’s Department of Homeland Security has provided New York City with $140 million in federal funding for the migrant crisis, Adams believes that more assistance is necessary to regain control of the situation.
“No city should have to endure this, including El Paso and Brownsville,” Adams stated on MSNBC, referring to two Texas cities that have also faced significant challenges due to the influx of migrants.
In addition to overwhelming the emergency shelter system, migrants have caused other issues in New York City. Some have engaged in public disturbances, while business owners in Manhattan report suffering due to the chaos spilling onto the streets from hotels being used as migrant shelters. Reports indicate that migrants have been involved in activities such as drinking and drug use within these hotels.
Similar to New York City, other major cities run by Democrats are also grappling with an influx of migrants as southern border states grow increasingly frustrated with shouldering the burden of the illegal immigration crisis alone.
So far, the Biden administration has allocated $45 million in federal funding to Illinois and Chicago to assist with the growing number of migrants in that region.
