NYC Mayor Slashes Police Budget to Cope with Illegal Aliens Amid Rising Crime, Begs Wealthy Residents for Help
New York City’s Sanctuary Chickens are Coming Home to Roost
In a shocking turn of events, Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has announced ”painful” budget cuts for 2024 in an attempt to address the skyrocketing costs caused by the city’s ongoing illegal immigrant crisis. These budget cuts, unveiled on Thursday, will affect various city agencies and services.
Instead of acknowledging the role of the city’s “sanctuary city” policies in creating this crisis, Adams has placed the blame on the lack of federal and state aid to offset the expenses. However, it is important to note that over 118,000 migrants have flooded into New York since spring 2022, with many being sent by Republican governors in Texas and Florida.
To close the massive $2.9 billion budget gap next year, Adams has proposed cuts across all city agencies. This includes a $1 billion reduction to the Department of Education, cuts to summer school and prekindergarten programs, reductions in trash pickups, and the elimination of Sunday hours at public libraries.
Shockingly, the proposed cuts also involve slashing the New York Police Department’s headcount by 4,000 officers over the next two years. This move effectively defunds the police by 13.5 percent at a time when major crime rates in the city continue to rise.
With the cancellation of the next five police academy classes, the number of officers will decrease to 29,000 by mid-2025. Meanwhile, felony crime reports in New York City have reached nearly 127,000 over the last fiscal year, marking a significant increase from previous years.
Unsurprisingly, these budget cuts have faced criticism from various quarters. Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, has called them a “disaster” for the safety of New Yorkers.

It is important to note that these cuts are being made to cover the costs of the migrants that the city has welcomed due to its “sanctuary” status. New York is projected to spend approximately $4.7 billion this fiscal year alone on services for migrants, including housing, food, and healthcare.
In a desperate plea for help, Mayor Adams has turned to some of the city’s wealthiest residents. At an exclusive Police Athletic League luncheon, he addressed the budget cuts and urged high-profile figures like actor Tony Danza and billionaire John Catsimatidis to use their influence to appeal to Washington, D.C. for assistance.
While liberals may take pride in the city’s sanctuary status, many are not happy about the resulting cuts. Lincoln Restler, chairman of the City Council’s progressive caucus, has criticized the cuts as unnecessary and dangerous, arguing that they will worsen New York’s affordability crisis and hinder the city’s economic recovery.
Instead of taking responsibility for the crisis, Mayor Adams continues to blame the lack of financial support from state and federal taxpayers. However, it is clear that New York’s sanctuary city policies have directly contributed to the migration wave and now pose a threat to essential services.
As the Biden administration’s border policies continue to attract more illegal immigrants to New York, the city is heading towards a vicious downward spiral. It is high time for Mayor Adams to acknowledge the failure of the sanctuary city experiment and take action to stop the worsening situation.
A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:
What if you woke up one morning and half of the people you count on had just vanished overnight?
That happened to me recently. I got up, came to work here at The Western Journal, and when I got to my office, literally half of our readers had vanished. They were just gone. We had been nuked by Facebook, and it had happened almost instantly.
But it was even worse. Facebook hit us at the same time 90 percent of advertisers had essentially boycotted us. ”Brutal” is a word I’ve used a lot lately.
The fight for the truth is brutal. The fight for America’s soul is brutal. What the government is doing to Jan. 6 detainees is brutal. What surgeons are doing to confused children is brutal.
It’s a fight we must win. But we can’t win without you.
A membership to The Western Journal will go much farther than you think. It costs less than a cup of Starbucks coffee, and for that small price you get access to ALL of our content — news, commentary, and premium articles — you’ll experience a radically reduced number of ads, and most importantly you will be vitally supporting the fight against leftism.
Can I count on you to join today? We need your help. Benjamin Franklin summed up the situation we’re all facing when he said, “We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”
We plan to hang in and fight. Please help us. Please become a member today.
Sincerely,
Josh Manning
