New York City Leases Floyd Bennett Field ⁣as Emergency Shelter for Thousands of Illegal‍ Immigrants

New ⁢York City has reached a leasing ‍deal ‌with the federal government to use Floyd Bennett Field as an emergency ‍site ‌to shelter thousands of ⁢illegal ⁣immigrants in the city, Mayor Eric⁣ Adams⁢ said on Friday.

In a⁤ statement on Sept. 15, Mr. ⁢Adams announced that⁢ Floyd Bennett Field will be utilized to house “some of the more ‍than ‍113,300 asylum seekers” who have entered the ‌city since ⁢last year.

Expressing gratitude to New ‌York Governor Kathy Hochul ‍for her commitment to fully reimburse the city for the use ⁢of ‍the site, Mr. Adams also emphasized the need for federal ‌assistance in managing the illegal immigration crisis.

Mr. Adams reiterated the urgency of the Biden ‍administration issuing ‌an emergency declaration ‌to allocate ⁢additional space and funding necessary for the city to ⁤effectively handle the influx of illegal immigrants.

“As I have said before, because we haven’t seen ‍meaningful policy changes that would alter the course of ⁣this crisis,⁤ we’ve⁣ been forced to unsustainably open⁣ new site after new site‍ as asylum seekers continue to arrive by the thousands,” he said.

“This is not an adequate solution or‍ any sort ⁣of long-term plan by the federal government to this national problem,” ‍the Democrat mayor added.

Crisis Could ‘Destroy’ NYC

Mr. Adams‌ had warned that the illegal immigration crisis ‍under the Biden ⁣administration will “destroy” his city, and that he⁢ doesn’t see an end to the problem as the Big Apple continues to struggle with ⁢an influx ⁤of tens of ⁣thousands of illegal ⁢immigrants⁣ from the southern border.

“Let me tell you something, New Yorkers.⁤ Never in my life have‌ I had a problem⁢ that I did not see an ending to.‌ I don’t see an ending to ‍this. This issue will destroy New ⁤York City,” he said on Sept. 6.

According to Mr. Adams,⁣ over 110,000 illegal aliens have arrived in New York City since spring 2022, with approximately 60,000 currently under the city’s care. To address the situation, ‌he announced the opening‍ of a shelter in Long Island City‌ capable of accommodating ⁢up to 1,000 illegal ⁢immigrants‍ seeking asylum.

“We’re getting 10,000 migrants ⁢a month,” Mr. Adams stated,‍ noting⁤ that initially, the majority were Venezuelans, but now there are also Ecuador nationals and Russian-speaking individuals crossing the U.S. southern border ⁣and heading to New York City.

“Now we’re getting Western Africa, now we’re getting people from⁢ all over the globe ‍that⁣ have made their minds up that they’re going to come through the southern part of the border and come to New York City,” he continued.

Mr. Adams has estimated ⁢that ⁣the illegal‌ immigration crisis could cost⁢ the⁤ self-declared “sanctuary city” $12 billion over⁢ three years if things don’t change.

In August, New York City opened a tent shelter at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in‌ Queens Village to accommodate up ⁣to 1,000 illegal immigrants as the city grapples with the influx of⁣ people.

The shelter, ⁢which began operating on Aug. 15, consists of two separate tents capable of housing 1,000 male immigrants. Local ‍officials anticipated receiving 100 immigrants ⁢on the opening day, according to the New York Post.

“I think if you’ve been paying attention to the number of ⁢people coming ‌in, 2,000, 2,500 ⁤a week ⁣… This place will ⁤be full very, very quick,” Zach Iscol, NYC’s Emergency Management commissioner, told reporters.

What additional federal assistance is needed to effectively manage the⁢ crisis and support the growing number of asylum seekers⁢ in New York City

Percent⁣ coming from the southern border. This ‍influx has⁤ placed a tremendous strain on the city’s resources and infrastructure, and the situation is worsening with each passing day.

The utilization of Floyd Bennett Field as⁣ an⁢ emergency‍ shelter for thousands ‌of illegal immigrants is both a necessary⁤ and temporary solution. It provides a safe and secure space where individuals can be housed while their cases are being⁢ processed. However, it⁣ is important⁤ to note that this is not a⁤ long-term plan, but rather a response to the immediate crisis at hand.

While the city is grateful for Governor Kathy Hochul’s commitment to fully‌ reimburse the use of‍ the site,‍ additional federal assistance is needed to effectively manage ‍this crisis. Mayor Adams has repeatedly‌ emphasized the need for the ⁢Biden administration to issue an ‌emergency declaration that allocates additional space and funding to New York⁣ City. Without this support, the ⁤city will continue to struggle to⁣ meet the ‌needs of the growing number of asylum seekers.

The mayor’s concerns ⁣are warranted, as he believes that ⁣the illegal immigration crisis has the ⁤potential to “destroy”‌ New York City. The strain on resources, the impact on infrastructure, and the overwhelming numbers of individuals arriving at the⁢ southern border are all contributing factors to this dire situation. Mayor Adams does not see‍ an end to this crisis unless meaningful policy ⁣changes are implemented.

It is important to recognize the gravity of the ‌situation and the urgent need for a comprehensive and sustainable solution. The federal⁣ government must take decisive action to address the root ‌causes of⁢ illegal immigration and⁢ provide the necessary support to cities like New York that are on the⁤ frontlines of this crisis.

In conclusion, the leasing ⁣of ⁤Floyd Bennett⁢ Field as an emergency⁣ shelter for thousands of illegal immigrants is a necessary response to ⁣the current crisis facing New ⁣York City. While ⁤this is not‌ a long-term solution, it provides a temporary respite for individuals while their cases are being ⁤processed. However, without additional‌ federal assistance, the city will continue to struggle to⁣ effectively manage ⁤the influx ‌of asylum ‍seekers. It is imperative that the Biden administration⁤ takes decisive action to address this crisis‌ and provide the necessary resources to prevent the potential ⁤destruction of New York City.
